I found this at home depot

http://www.homedepot.com/h_d1/N-5yc1v/R-202205611/h_d2/ProductDisplay?storeId=10051&keyword=010306105699&jspStoreDir=hdus&Nu=P_PARENT_ID&navFlow=3&catalogId=10053&langId=-1&ddkey=Search

Not sure if its a new product but I've never seen this before, seems perfect for drilling glass. Figured I'd share.

Why not use a diamond bit that is made to cut glass. By the description, it doesn't mention glass at all.

I bought this set off ebay a while back:

http://cgi.ebay.com/5-pc-DIAMOND-TILE-GLASS-MARBLE-HOLE-SAW-CORE-DRILL-BIT-/310288490085?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item483ea29e65

I've drilled a lot of holes with those bits, never a break or problem.

Looks like a nice unit to me. If it cuts porcelain it will cut glass. Basically the same thing. Nice guide. I like it.

The guide is what got me to buy it. We will see how it does in few hours, will be drilling my new 55. Little scared I must say :)

One thing to remember....always let the tool do the work. Many often apply to much pressure and get disappointing results.
Glass is a very hard surface so it will take time to get through.
Good luck,

One down, one to go. Of course my battery died :(
Thanks Ralph, I didnt apply any force, just the weight of the drill. I got little chip off on the inside, but I imagine the gasket goes on the outside so it should be good.

I've used real diamond drills and the home depot drills on glass (not aquarium glass.) The later wear out very fast and water cooling didn't seem to help. That said, I didn't use a "pool" of water and that might be why. A small drop of dish washing soap is critical in the water. The one poster is correct, let the drill do the work. Glass is harder than porcelain. Also, not sure these drills are good for tempered tank glass so be careful.

I've not seen successful drilling of tempered glass at home.....the tension releases, and the glass shatters......

Hi Jim, How many holes have you done? Thanks, Woody

How many holes have you done? This will be my first shot at this! I have several 29s, a 55, a 75 and a 180 to do. I do know the bottom of the 55 is tempered. Thanks in advance, Woody

I've got thirty drilled tanks; be careful, and for sure dodge any tempered glass. It has to have the holes drilled before they heat it..Unlike steel, I don't know how to take the temper out...regular grade glass is fairly simple..

Done about a dozen with that specific set, doing a few more this weekend. Work well, go slow, keep it wet and cool.

I recently drilled a tank for the first time. 5 holes on my 190g. Practiced on a spare 20g. The hard part is getting over the fear. Once you do one you'll see how easy it is. I also used the cheap-o glass bits on eBay. Worked like a charm for my project.

You can cut regular plate glass with any diamond bit, as long as you keep it wet and cool. If it runs dry, you'll ruin it in just a few seconds. The only difference between the cheap bits and the expensive ones is the quality. The cheap ones will wear out much quicker. Not an issue if you're only drilling a few holes.

i think the bulkhead gasket goes on the inside of the tank.
