Ok so next week I am finally going to start to set up my fish room. Really its going to be a LFS but I am not going to say any names just because im not a sponsor. I have been planing this for about a year and a half now and I cant wait to get going. The tanks that I am going to use is 1x300,2x180, 4x125, 2x80, 4x75, 8x55, 4x40, 3x35, 15x20, and 30x10. I move in Monday and I am going to start building the stands/racks as soon as I get the keys.

Yea its a retail spot but i dont just have discus. I am going to have African cichlids, Discus, South American cichlids, Angels, Rainbows and some exotic freshwater. Also saltwater, and corals plus your everyday fresh water.

I do hope to keep it fun and not turn it into a job

Good Luck. I am envious. I would love to do that for fun but I'm afraid mt expenses too high and I'd go bankrupt. Maybe if I didnt spend so much on discus.... nah

Awesome. What kind of filtration do you intend to use for the store? Independent tanks or all on a recirculating system?

They are all going to be independent tanks that way each species can have their own enviroment

Dan, Izzit too late, or are you too far along to make a change or two? If you recess your front and back stringers into pocket cuts, the load will transfer into the legs, and not just be in shear on the fasteners..All my racks are wood also. Gary

I think he is saying is to cut a notch in your uprights the same size of your horizontal boards. Then you place the horizontal boards into the notch. This way the weight is on the uprights and not the nails. Another option is to cut short 2x4's and insert them between each level of horizontal boards. Put them tight to the upright and nail in place.

Yep, Puurrrty dang old!! Some I've had forever, but I just bought eighty of them along with racks from a distributor that had them since 1951!..No kidding, same location all their lives before now. The racks are California Redwood, also that old....

HA! My first tanks 2-10 gallons were like that. I was always jealous when my friends would get the new frame-less!then when the hob filters with motors came about I was really jealous! I had the hob with the airline!

So i have to be honest, im a tad worried that your tank stands may give out the way its set up with 2 nails/screws per level per leg? I didnt see any resting blocks underneath them either? Im not en engineer or anything but just dont want them all to come crashing down on ya when theyre all filled with water

I just made sure everything is going to fit and now I am going to run a nut and bolt between the 2 screws

i still dont think thats enough. with the 2x4's these days i would worry about the shearing effect of the bolt that you're going to put in between those would screws. and how long are those wood screws? i think the safest thing to do like someone mentioned is to put some short 2x4 ( at least 6 inches is what i do) under the horizontal beams. it's so much easier/cheaper to do it now than later with those tanks filled with water and stock.

if u think it's still safe to just put the bolt and screws at the ends, at least use washers and both sides of the 2x4's.

Woah this is going to be massive, can't wait to see how it develops.

I second OILERS' opinion. Add a 6 inch piece of 2x4 running vertically with 2-3 bolts every 1.5-2 inches.
