I am in the process of setting up a 100 gallon tank for discus and i was wondering which color would be best. I saw at a LFS they had black as the back ground with sand on the bottom and it looked really nice. So i bought one and tried the black and blue.

Which one would you guys pick??

I think when it comes to discus, you want a lighter color. The black will promote peppering if you plan on having any pigeon blood based fish.I'd even go with a lighter blue if if your LFS has it.Normaly I'd say go with what you like, but you asked for opinions.Good luck...Bill.

I have mine on a black background and there was min. peppering on my pigeon and I really like the way the blue and red discus look against it...

So this time i actually cleaned the tank and i taped on the blue background and filled it with water. Why does the tank look so dark???

Is there anything i can do to brighten it up??? But when i take a picture from the side its actually quite bright inside.

Little white things you see are just bubbles. I just filled it up

I had a dark blue and the fish became lost against it. I actually switched to a plant type background with a mix of greens and variations of blue...everyone POPs with color now

I've been in the "Discus keeping" for only 5 months now; based on what I've read - blue or light blue should be applied when the plan is to have a pair.
I keep my discuses in all black background, no peppering what so ever. An they are PB.

I actually just painted the back of my 125 with a aqua colored spray paint and love the way it looks I had a background like you did on my 55 and hated how it got so dark.

a black background can make your discus very uncomfortable. I have seen them lay around and look /act sickly or lethargic. and when changed to a lighter blue they perked tight up!

I've tried 3 different shades of blue (from light to dark) as well as the black, and found that the plants, fish & PFS looked best with a medium blue background.

The main reason the empty tank looks dark, is well, because it's empty! It will look different with objects and fish in there.

This is true.
