Hi all,

My name is Ben and i am new to discus.I have been keeping tropical fish for years and have slowly progressed to more and more rare breeds and now i have sold all my fish and decided to take the plunge.I have always loved discus but worried about all the online talk saying they are really hard to keep.
After some research i have learned that its far from impossible as long as they key factors are correct so i have 4 discus ordered and i will be collecting on friday,Cant wait!!

Looking forward to learning all i can about them and maybe even giving breeding a shot once they are big enough.Just hope from the 4 i get,That i might get a pair.

Thanks for all the welcomes.I am excited about getting my discus on friday. The guy has asked me to go back to the shop on wednesday so he can tell me what strains his supplier has so i can pick my 4.Any advice?

Should i buy 2 pairs of the same strain or 4 completely different colours?

If these are your first discus most people seem to go for one of each strain they like. After a while you might find yourself wanting to go with a single strain tank. Of course you can always do more tanks :)

I am working on that with my wife,Trying to convince her that an 8 foot tank is a good idea

No one mentioned 4 is a bad number. Best to get at least 6 for spreading out aggression and territoriality. Welcome and good luck.

Would a single pair be ok?
I was supposed to get them today but i spoke to the guy mid week and he said the batch of juvies he got in were infected so he wont sell them to me but he has a large adult pair that he will give me for the same price because of the letdown.

He said they are sexable but havent bred yet.

Welcome to DISCUS Ben, 2 that's suppose to be a pair but haven't bred yet I be careful on that, might be 2 females that get along. But I say if they get along with no problems and you have the cash go for it you get lucky. If I was you I'd search around for a local breeder, so youcan get quality fish not from a LFS. But this is JMO, good luck though your gonna enjoy the ride.....................Jim in Ohio
