Depends on how fresh it is. I collect the really old and aged wood. It's almost white and pretty brittle. That will sink overnight. The fresher manzanita can take a long time. I had some pieces floating for a month and they still didn't sink. I ended up attaching them to pieces of tile to anchor them down because I couldn't wait any longer.

Looks like this

I had pieces which sunk after a week and other pieces which floated after 3 weeks. It just depends on the piece. They all eventually sink.

It won't sink until it is completely waterlogged. It can take a while, depending on how dry it is. The wood tends to turn dark brown when it's full of water.

Hard to say what the white stringy stuff is without a pic. However, newly soaked wood often gets grayish-white fungus growing on it for a while, which normally disappears by itself. Or you could have stringy gray hair algae growing on it. Can't really say without a pic. I am soaking some Manzanita myself right now in a covered tub, but I have nothing weird growing on it at present; the last piece of Malaysian I soaked a few months back got fungus big time- it went away by itself as usual after a month in the tank.

Mine took a long time as well. I have it in my swimming pool, (It's winter ya know;) I was also using chlorine to sanitize it.
