View Full Version : Albino San Merah - Wohoo Confirmed

I got 3 Albino San Merah from Mike Beals last shipment. These guys are beautiful, IMO. Mike told me that two of them were spawning as he was bagging them to send to me. Within a week of being in the QT they spawned again. Couldn't really tell if the one not laying eggs was a male or not. Very small spawn and they ate the eggs the next day. I went down to the fish room this afternoon to find them guarding eggs on the cone. The tubes were still down and the one I am hoping to be a male looks like a male. Time will tell. The eggs look good. Here are some pictures, enjoy.

Thanks everyone. They are indeed that red in person. I pulled the third one out of the tank last night and put quick cure in to help keep the eggs from getting fungus. I also put a cage around them. I am not pushed to get a good spawn at this time but I really would like to confirm if it is a pair. Went down today and no changes. No fungus, which is a big plus to give time needed to see if they are fertilized.

Checked the eggs last night and was dissappointed because they didn't look any different. It did look like some were moving but I wrote that off to the parents fanning them and the flow making them move a little. These parents have not left the cone for a minute. I went down this morning to feed everyone before heading to work and checked the eggs again. At first I didn't notice it but took another look and sure enough WIGGLERS. Confirmed Pair!! With non - albinos you see a color change with the wiggler being a dark color. With albinos there is no color change at all. The egg is red and the wiggler is red, but the magnifying glass doesn't lie. Wooohoooooo

Thanks, I have my fingers crossed also. It isn't a large batch and the hard part is to get them to attach. Will see what happens but if this one doesn't work out they will probably be at it again in a week or so. They were still on the cone when I left for work this morning.

That's great news Larry. Do you know what that pair will give you, all Albino San Merahs?

All albinos but I believe it would be San Merah and something like Rose Reds would be the throw back. At least that's what my limited knowledge of genes tells me.

Well it will be a little later. They ate the wigglers. It was a very small spawn. I am just very happy to know they are a pair. I now have them set up in one of my 20H breeders.

Round Two. They layed eggs sometime after I left for work and before I got home. Pretty good size clutch. Started to put a screen over the cone and several eggs started to fall off so I am leaving it off. Next few days will tell.

Got a case of the no-stickys. This too will subside with maturity. Happened with all my albinos. Actually, sounds like a defect in the fish. You better let
me take them so they don't affect your other fish.

When you say you put some "quick cure" in to keep fungus down, is that the same as the meth blue? How much do you use?

Not the same thing. Quick cure contains Malachite Green which helps keep the fungus off the eggs. The correct dosing is 1 drop per gallon I believe but Sabres1 told me he used a syringe to spray directly on the eggs. I tried that this time. Because of the coloring you can see it coat the eggs. I would think this would enable you to use less than the amount that is called for for the entire tank.

Well I read on the genetics thread where Rod said San Merah breed pretty true. Time will tell.

Do you have any other non-albino pairs in breeding tanks currently laying eggs? Reason I ask is I have much better luck moving the free swimmers with a turkey baster and placing them with the foster parents, the key is timing, ideally the foster parents should have wigglers of there own that are within a day of free swimming themselves.

I do but at the time this last batch came along the pair I had with fry were already about 12 days free swimming so there would be a huge size difference and I didnt' try it.

Allwin,

He sent them to me, we could never get them to spawn again after Larry first got them:(

Now that you have all the tank painted, you should see a little better luck.
