Pretty tank. New setup?

fast93accord
05-29-2011, 08:01 PM
Yep. Brand new. I bought a used 55g with stand and cycled emperor 400 for $100. Added a new coralife t5ho 2 bulb, which is very nice BTW. Added a new Ac110, didn't put in carbon, with about 2.5 packs of noodles. I pack was cycled out of my year old Ac70... I'm new to discus. A lot of people bash plants in sand, but I find they root 10x faster then Eco complete, don't use root tabs, just liquid ferts. And have had plants grow great! The tank has been up for a month...

Thanks. I'm running a co2 line to it this weekend, from my tank in another room. Just gotta wait for my diffuser to come in the mail. I'm hoping it works out since I have a sponge filter in there...

Nice. Hopefully it will look more beautiful as the tank matures. Have you read through this thread-Aquascaping Critique? it will help u gain more control over your setup. Good luck! :)

Spliced in co2 from my bottle going to another tank.... The stem plants took off. The sword type plants are just starting to take off. I'm sure its gonna be a month till they get nice size. So, 2 particular discus took off in growth also. My Marlboro red, and my red turquoise grow very fast compared to the rest. http://tapatalk.com/mu/47f5d3c1-ab75-9f2d.jpghttp://tapatalk.com/mu/47f5d3c1-abad-a091.jpghttp://tapatalk.com/mu/47f5d3c1-abc8-78dc.jpghttp://tapatalk.com/mu/47f5d3c1-abe7-9aea.jpghttp://tapatalk.com/mu/47f5d3c1-ac1a-8cce.jpghttp://tapatalk.com/mu/47f5d3c1-ac41-67d8.jpghttp://tapatalk.com/mu/47f5d3c1-ac4d-c3ca.jpghttp://tapatalk.com/mu/47f5d3c1-ac62-06f7.jpg

very nice! i love the plants :) when i get my 75 gal i'm going to do plants in pfs too :)

They say pfs is cory safe. I find this not true. I had my corys in supernaturals sand for 6 months and they were great. My corys r in with the discus now and their barbells are all worn down...

Very nice tank!! I just completed a similar set up, and I was wondering what you use to keep your plants thriving? I use root
tabs and Flourish Excel.

Also wondering if should I remove the carbon from my AC110? Not sure if it negates the Excel.

o.o;; hw are the plants holding up? have they popped outta sand at all?

fast93accord
08-20-2011, 11:24 PM
Thanks. The plants never come up. I don't use root tabs. Just liquid ferts. I cut them back due to algae. Carbon takes out any ferts. I would trash it... The only problem I'm having with this tank is finding which plants can take the heat... Some will grow and just die. I think its cause of temp... Same plants have worked in cooler tanks. All sword type plants hold up. The only stem plant that survives is rotilla indica. The stem plants next to my rotilla, pink hippo grass, was growing well, but random plants new growth dies off. I think I may end up tossing them to try another.

It's only been a few days, but yes, they have floated out. I attached lead sinkers and that seems to work.

Cool! I a have a thread started on a setup just like yours with a 55G tank and pool filter sand. I'm trying to decide on plants that will work well in the higher temps, could you please list the plants you are using? They seem to be working well!

There is currently 5 in my 55g. One is in a hospital tank due to not eating in weeks. He's stunted so I don't care if he doesn't recover. I'm a few days away from pulling 2 others from the tank. 3 I got from one place don't grow for ****, and don't eat enough. Only 3 from a different source eat tons and grow like weeds. I was just told the store I like just got some cobalts in. I may check them out... As for plants, all sword type plants except for the marble swords r doing well. The marbled swords grow then defoliate... The only stem plant doing well is rotila indica. The pink hippo grass grows well then random ones just die, so there getting yanked. The only swords I remember that r doing well is ozalot, melon, and amazon. I can't remember the other 2 names...

Well the lfs that has nice young discus had some ones labeled cobalt. Some had a little pattern on them some were solid blue. They were too nice to pass up so I bought one of the solid ones. Would of liked to buy a few more but I'm already overstocked... http://tapatalk.com/mu/47f5c082-4b94-e7a7.jpghttp://tapatalk.com/mu/47f5c082-4ba1-4581.jpghttp://tapatalk.com/mu/47f5c082-4bb4-aa62.jpghttp://tapatalk.com/mu/47f5c082-4bc4-c661.jpghttp://tapatalk.com/mu/47f5c082-4bd5-c3d1.jpghttp://tapatalok.com/mu/47f5c082-4be8-fd35.jpghttp://tapatalk.com/mu/47f5c082-4c02-5999.jpg. They new fish eats everything!!! Some of these pics are the others and they're progress...

Here's a vid of my tank... Had to pull all stem plants... All grew well then died...***... Either too hot for them, or I should of used root tabs... Will try again in the future...

Hey very, very nice tank you have there! Just wondering how much light do you give your tank (hrs/day) and what type of t5 bulbs are you using?

fast93accord
11-25-2011, 11:00 AM
Thanks. It has a new coralife 48" t5ho light, with 1 10k and 1 7600k. 9hrs light, but I'm gonna cut it back to 8... Co2 is cranked and still have algae... May need to remove 1 bulb if I can't beat it....
