Hi everyone, another noob here and i'm glad i found SD forum. i just bought a 50 gallon fish tank and how do i get it cycled? i transferred 50% of water from my other tank, heater ( 28 degrees ) and put a filter to get the water flow around. i dont plan to put any canister filter or power filter. I only plan to put two sponge filter. i plan to transfer my 4 discus from my other tank to this tank and i dont want to put any other fish in there.

Use established sponge filters from ur tank.. Thats all u need. Also use Search function top right corner and put in cycle tank

You could put some media from your established tank's filter into a submersable, box filter and drop that in your new tank. You only need to leave it there long enough for the filters in the new tank to become seeded. Something like this should work just fine: http://www.kensfish.com/boxfilters/LEE_TRIPLE_FLOW.jpg

If you buy this model, be careful not to break the little plastic 'teeth' at the intake.

Since it's a new tank, you can use pure ammonia to fishless cycle. Then you don't have to worry about cross contamination, but keep it mind that this will take a few weeks.

Hell *** i ran around most of the LFS to find ammonia but none of them have it, they gave me DENITROL. Instruction: For newly established aquariums and after treatment for disease: 1st day - 10 ml for 100 l ( 22 imp. gal / 26.4 US gal ). 9 further days: 10 ml per day for 300 l ( 66 imp. gal / 79 US gal ). Gradually begins stocking fish after 48 hours. Use a double dose in saltwater in each case. Excess doses can be given without any problems.

first thought, second thoughts, third thoughts??? im still confused. i'll try to find ammonia ( why it has to be so hard to find ) tomorrow and if i couldnt find any, denitrol will be my last option. i'll try grocery stores and pharmacy as 2wheelsx2 mentioned above.
