Hello everyone, I am building my 90 gallon tank to and attempting on keeping 6 or 8 Discus. This would be the first time I would keep these wonderful fish. Previously I kept 8 Koi Angels in the same tank but had to redo everything due to some equipment malfunction and unfortunately I lost all my fish. My question is has anyone out there had any experience with the Aqueon Pro-Flex model 4 or the Eshopps the dual wet/dry filter 200-300 gallon sump. I am indecisive and stuck between these two models.
- Eshopps Wet-Dry Filter:
36" x 14" x 16"
35 gallon sump capacity
For 200-300 gallon tanks
Includes overflow box & accessories, bio balls (10 gal), media tray, cover, egg crate, pre-filter pad, return valve, clear vinyl tubing, 3 ft. of 1 1/4" drain hose
I understand that the Eshopps wet/dry would be less expensive because it comes with everything for fast installation.
Additionally this model also holds more media, 10 gallons of bio-balls.
Also this model holds 35 gallons as opposed to 25.
This model is rated for Aquariums up to 300 gallons.
-Aqueon Pro-Flex Model 4:
Overall Dimensions 36 in. x 13 3/4 in. x 18 7/8 in.
Maximum Tank Size Up to 210 gallon.
This model I am not sure how much media it holds.
I do like that it has the dual filter bags also as opposed to none.
It also has that feature in the dual-intake of the sump which would make it a little quieter.
I don't like that I would then have to buy the Bio-Ball kit (additional cost).
This model is rated for Aquariums up to 210 gallon.
So I would like to see if anyone has any experience with these 2 models and if yall have any pictures of your setup?

Eshopps is the better choice. Holds more media. Maintenance would be much easier based on layout of design. If your worried about not having micro socks, then use filter floss with it.
By far the better choice for a freshwater aquarium. Based on media capacity and design.

Thanks for responding I figured as much but like I said I have never used a sump before, currently I am using a FX5 on my 90 gal. I would really like to see if anyone has any pictures of there setups or knows any good links? Especially if there using either one of these sumps.

Im currently using the ProFlex model 3 on my 90, and am quite happy with it. IMHO the model 4 is overkill. I like it because although the eshoppes holds more media, the ProFlex holds plenty. I love the diffuser where intake comes in to eliminate bubbles, and it does have two filter socks as well. This is my first sump also, so cant comment on others, but so far it works as advertised, was fairly easy to set up, and so far is pretty quiet.

Just curious why are switching from an FX5 to a sump?
If I had the cash I'd go FX5 on my 100g
But my sump is all DIY. 30g rubbermaid tub, filtersocks, biobale, and Te return pump. Other than the pump I got 50 bucks into whole thing.

I did pretty much the same type of thing jlcoop. When I bought my big tank (used on craigslist) the guy threw in a 55g tank, a crappy old reef sump (ewwwwww) and the overflow box, which was still in really good shape.
Sooooo, the 55 became my sump and I just added poret foam, the heater and a pump. Instant sump for just the cost of the pump and the foam. Lately though I've been seriously considering substituting a rubbermaid tub for the tank so I can use the tank as a breeder. Seems like a waste of good glass and silicone at this point. LOL

Toni, for a sump that's rather inexpensive, but much stronger than most other plastic containers, I recommend a "Strong Box" storage container. I got mine at Lowe's a few years ago, but I'm sure you could find one online as well. Very thick, black plastic with a yellow trimmed lid, made in Canada. It's rated for 400 lbs., holds 27 gals, and does not flex under water pressure at all. Great product.

sumps are really great. i used a 40 gallon as a sump for my 90 gallon reef and it was nice having my return pump skimmers heaters and such all in there together out of the tank. a simple overflow box and your good to go. i removed all my bio media as the huge amount of live rock in the tank worked just as well. i used the tank as extra gallons and space for equipment. simple and easy to use. dont need to look at it but i find the guts of any system fun to look at and play with. any tank can be a sump for any tank. have fun with it.

If I'da known this, I would have brought you a few 30's for sumps....got at least 20 empty metaframes; extra tough. maybe next mining trip...Gary
Which ever sump you go with, I'd consider fluidised bed media over bio balls...it's all about bacteria, and they live better on beds IMO

Well dangit Gary, I was hoping maybe your trip was delayed this month since I hadn't heard from you. <insert much whining and sobbing here>
Thanks to my spawning pair problem I had to think fast and do "something" with them before they picked off anymore cardinals...soooooo, my old 54g pent tank is now a temporary breeding tank. It still has the blue paint on the back, so if they do get free swimmers it's going to be a son of a gun to get them attached to the parents, but at least they are officially out of my display tank as of last night.
Oh and on the plus side, my DT is SO calm and happy this morning! The remaining 7 discus are grouped together in a calm friendly little bunch and are swimming round and round. No more nudging and biting...woot!
Thanks for the heads up Darrell, I'll see if I can head to Lowe's this coming weekend to check out the storage boxes, they sound like exactly what I need (till Gary makes another mining trip and oh yes Gary, I'll be waiting for some "darnits" in exchange for dinner...lol)

walmart sells the black box with yellow lid as well but I bought it at lowes. fwiw I have had mixed luck with them on one tank it was the jam on another the box leaked and made a huge mess. I do like the black plastic 49g truck tool boxes they sell at walmart, super strong , uv resistant , and only $40
