View Full Version : Finally, I have myself a red discus.

It's been long time coming or at least it seems that way, but I finally acquired a red discus. I've wanted one since I first saw San Merahs, but alas those seem to have disappeared from the market. Anyway, with William Palumbo wanting to exit discus breeding as his main source of income and my good friend Jay buying the two matched strain pairs of Bills I was most interested in, Jay suggested I buy his old Rose Red from Bill. Below are the pictures of her with her BSS mate and a dozen and a half little bonuses.

Do you know what the fry will look like??

My guess would be some Rose red type fry and some red turq type fry. The rose reds and virgin reds seem to have very strong genes from what I have seen so far.

Very nice Keith. Probably ups the time spent in the fish cave quite a bit. It's about time you got the pics up. Congrats.

Thanks ladies, obviously I'm fond of her. She's looking a little tattered at the moment from feeding babies, but they've seemed to have quit feeding off the parents at this point so I'm not going to separate them just yet unless she starts looking worse.

Bill also said Rose Red appeared to be dominant but that he also had gotten snakeskins from the pair. Of course just about everything seems to throw turqs, so I could easily see that too.

Hey, posting pics is not that easy. First I have to take about 30 pics to get 3 I like. Then I have to borrow my wife's computer to get them uploaded to photobucket, Followed by figuring out how to upload them to SD. See, I'm tired just recalling it all. :) Might have to find one of those good Wisconsin beers just to recover.

That's what fry do Jay, as I'm sure you'll soon see. Where the heck are your pictures of the pairs you got from Bill and their new fry??? You ought to show pics of the old classic story...buy a pair of fish, bring them home, and the first thing they do is spawn. :D

By the way, I'm glad things worked out the way they did. Might not have gotten my long desired red discus if you hadn't bought those two pairs from Bill when you did. Funny how things work out some times.

Looking good Keith...the fry looked like they doubled in size already! Glad you and Jay are happy with your pairs. I hope jay posts some pics of his Altum SS pair...I miss them!...Bill

I guess you don't notice growth as much when you see them every day. That and you don't have tome to sit back and look at them because all you do is change their water and feed them constantly! LOL

I ended up culling one of the fry yesterday that was floundering about. As I said earlier mom is looking a little tough and I noticed her sort of going after fry that dared pick at her. I suspect she may have given that one a good whack. All seems pretty calm this evening though, I'll be watching to see what's going on later when I do yet another WC. :) I'd just as soon not separate them yet, but they'll be the judge of that. Shutting off tank lights last night I'm sure helped give her a good break.

Hey Keith - hopefully you'll get some REALLY SUPER RED SS's out of that batch.
As you may recall, I got a few RSS's a few months ago @ around 3", watched them grow, lose their bars, and really deepen in reddish color. A few are now 5.5" or so, and looking better every week. Love 'em.
Can't wait to see those fry of yours in a couple of months.

For a red that's a real beauty Keith! I'm not real big on red fish but that one has some great color.

The babies I got from you are eating like pigs :) Sometimes they seem to "enjoy" biting my fingers instead of their food that I'm holding! I'd post pics but not sure if there is a particular thread I should do it in.

Well as you saw from your visit I'm mostly into blues, but I wanted something to really contrast that. The marlboro reds I got for that purpose turned out to be a major disappointment, so I've been looking for a nice non-PB for quite some time.

Glad to hear the fish have acclimated so well. They pretty much always ate anything I put in the tank so I'm not too surprised to hear they're eating well, especially with the nice variety of food you're offering them. I've always kind of enjoyed getting nipped, just another discus thing to smile about. As far as posting pictures goes, why not just start a new thread here in my homesteader section...call it Fish I got from Keith. Then I can harass a few other folks to add some pics too.

LOL ok will do! I'll try to get some good pictures of them and then post. The last thing I want to do is detract from them because of shotty picture quality :D

Oh man, I kid you not, when those turqs pair off if you've got an extra pair that you want to re-home I want them back. Dang, they turned exactly like I hoped they would with that pair. Sure wish that pair would start cooperating again. Stupid egg eating male!

Very nice pictures that you posted. Hope you were able to take less than I would have had to to get them. The snakes you got from Bill are really really nice. Maybe it is a good thing you beat me to Chicago. :) jk It all worked out pretty well in the end for everyone I think.

Jay, I really like those scribblets. When I first joined SD if Bill had shipped I would have been starting out with some of their fry. And Keith's RT are very nice. :)
