Your new discus should just love it !
Just a wee caution: keep an eye on those clown loaches, they're pretty big & will get bigger - and could eventually cause your discus a lot of stress & grief. In fact, they probably will.
Otherwise, a super-looking set-up for discus.

Sweet tank, what is that a 6footer? What are the dimensions of your tank?

Thanks for the heads up about the loaches they are at about 1.5-3" now and will end up swapping them for smaller ones once they reach the point of bugging the discus there just isnt a better bottom feeder these guys do a great job at keeping the bottom clean. Also most of my discus will be between 5"-6" and there will be only 3 at 4" so that should also minimize any issues hopefully :) The tank is a 125gallon 6 foot long 18 inches wide and 22 inches deep! I have got to canisters one is a fluval 404 and the other a fluval 405 no co2 about 2.5 watts per gallon do a little fertilizing of the plants with some root tabs. nitrate stays between 5-10ppm with currently just doing a weekly water change of 25% which will obviously change to a couple times a week of 25%-50%. Oh and im getting 4 classic leopards at the 4.5-5" size, 3 PE's at the 5.5-6" size, 3 thick line red turqs at 6" and 3 checkerboards at 4" :) let me know what you guys think about all these details :)

Not meaning to rain on your parade, rostick, but why run any risks at all by keeping clown loaches with discus, and then planning on replacing them and getting smaller ones when the others grow larger ? No matter what size the discus are, nor what size the clown loaches are, they'll be constantly in the discus' faces no matter what, and will, if nothing else, continuously unnerve & stress the discus with their rapid, frantic and constant activity. The loaches, of any size, will very likely "bug" the discus - it will just worsen as they get larger.
Just trying to be of help - 'cause if your discus are undergoing constant stress and don't feel comfortable with their suroundings, they' ll just become very susceptible to serious health problems from a weakened immune system. Many discus keepers have seen the often fatal results of that.

.. do you have any concerns with adding your new stock to a tank that has fish already in it..

Real nice looking tank and I like the selection of fish you picked.
I assume they are from the latest Kenny's Fish shipment in which case the thick line Turqs I thought to be especially nice.
The leopards and Penang Eruptions are other favorites of mine too.
Regarding the loaches, a friend of mine has a 135 gallon tank with about ten full grown discus and three big loaches.
They have been together in there for a couple of years and there is no problem.
I also thought there are a few different strains of loaches with some being more compatible than others, although I really don't know much about them.
Anyway, looking forward to seeing your new fish and good luck.

I have 10 large clowns (a few over 6") in my 265G tank with my discus. I used to have 6 very large geo. altifrons as well. The geos' constant activities were definitely bothering the discus. Not sure if they bothered enough to stress them out to get them sick, but I saw enough. I got rid of three altifrons and things are much calmer and better. My loaches don't seem to cause as much issues for my discus. Yes, they are active at times, but 125G is a big enough tank that loaches shouldn't be an issue. This of course is based on my personal experiences. I love having loaches in my tank.

Oh, very nice set up, by the way. Congrats! :-)

Yes they are from his current stock :) in regards to the clown loaches I had them before with my discus also and they worked very well together for about 2 years and then I got out of the discus scene for a good while. I am hoping for the same with the current set up.

Thanks for looking out hopefully it will not come to them being stressed or unnerved. As mentioned earlier I have kept them together before and they did great but again thank you for your opinion. :)

Do what your 'gut feel' tells you rostick, and hopefully you'll have no problems - but I would still suggest keeping a careful eye on how the clowns' behavioural antics are affecting your discus as time goes on - after all the discus are beautiful fish no doubt, from a great source (and not inexpensive, I'm sure) and I'm certain your first and foremost thoughts will be on their well-being.
Not to belabor the issue, but I do know that a number of the success stories of discus & clown loaches getting along very well together, is usually when both species have more or less 'grown up' together over a period of time & gotten to 'tolerate' each other without incident. Introducing fairly mature specimens of clowns with new discus just settling in to a new environment, may be an entirely different matter. Just my two cents.

2 Month update thank you to everyone once again for you all of your suggestions. The clowns are no more I can tell you they are pigs they are always hungry and they were munching on my plants so got rid of them and picked up 3 corys 1 siamese algae eater and 6 shrimp. I have been very busy trying to keep everyone healthy and happy very high bio load thus having to do water changes every other day at 50%. My smallest ones which came in at 4inches (checkerboard pigeons have grown almost an inch since I got them all on Aug. 15th have one pair that I am preparing to seperate things are going well with alot of time put into it of course :) Enjoy the pics!

Very nice fish! Specially the eruptions, what kind are they exactly? I am guessing the larger one is a Super Eruption and the small one a Penang Eruption?

How much did you spend and where did you get them?!?!?!?

Yes all of them will stay in the High temp you are referring to the one in the middle that is a tiger lotus beautiful plant I just made a mistake in trimming all of it. I'm still new to this whole planted thing but I am finally getting a hang of this Low Tech setup I think :)

50% every other day yes clowns are gone they were a pain they were pigs munching on my plants making wholes in all the plants definately not recommended for a planted set up I bought shrimp about 3 weeks ago now and they are doing great have yet to become a treat for the adults I bought 6 and still have all 6 :)

Following along on this! Great job! Any maintenance nightmares in the past couple months? What's the frequency of water changes now (I read earlier you were doing 40%-60% every other day, or something of that nature)? And, I may have missed it, what are you using for substrate? I'll go back and read again before I post any questions that have already been answered.

Yes I was doing wc every other day when it was stocked with 13 adults but since then I have lowered my bio load to 8 adults so I do 50-60% every 5 days or so but I think I'm going to up that a bit because I saw alot more mating activity with more water changes thus they were alot happier of course! :) The substrate is from aquariumplants.com called there amazon color it has worked amazing for me!

Hey, thanks for the reply! I'm looking at setting up a 65 gallon and trying to weigh out my options. Definitely going to have to automate a portion of the waterchange process... Keep up the good work.

I like it! I'm curious, did you order from Kenny's October shipment? If you did what did you order? I got fish from that shipment and I'm trying to compare size/color/growth rates (I have a planted tank too).

Thank you guys I really appreciate all of the wonderful comments! :) I got these from his July shipment but they came in on Aug 15th I ordered 3 thickline red Turqs at 6+", 3 Penang eruptions at 5.5-6",
4 Classic leopards at the 4.5-5", and last but not least 3 checkerboard pigeons at the 4" mark. Since then my checkerboard is around the 5-5.5" I sold the other 2 checkerboards and sold one of my penang eruptions. Classic leopards are around 6" penangs are around 6.5" the thicklines are 7"+ huge and I have a pair of the thicklines raising babies now here is some pics. Enjoy :)

Update on my tank I have moved it from my office into my living room with a complete rescape and a little less bio load. Just a refresher on what I have if you have not kept up with it. Its a 125g planted discus tank with substrate from aquariumplants.com, plants from the same place (im sorry I dont remember all of the names of the plants), I have 3 cories, 5 cardinal tetras, 6 rummy nose tetras, 2 bn plecos, 1 siamese algae eater, Crystal red cherry shrimp, Amano shrimp, yellow shrimp, blue and amber shrimp, and lastly I just added some MTS snails because I can no longer successfully vacuum the substrate. I am also up to 3 fluval 404-405 canister filters which I clean once a week, I do 1 weekly wc of about 50%, I ad root tabs for fertilizer twice a month, no CO2, and my lights are Compact flourescent 65wx6 bulbs I run the lights from 10am-8pm in stages of half on from 10am-noon then the other half come on and run together from noon-5pm and then the first half cuts off and the second half stays on from 5pm-8pm. Hope that makes sense, well here are the pics!

Well I just remembered to look up whether my root tabs have nitrate supplement in them, which they do so now I know why I am having 5-10ppm nitrates between water changes. Can all the plant people chime in with there recommendations on a good over all plant nutrient with out nitrates please? I would really appreciate it as mentioned this was my first ever planted tank even though I have kept discus in the past :) thanks guys for all the wonderful comments and help on my current issue!

5 - 10ppm for nitrates is fine so I'd leave well alone. All general purpose root tabs I know of contain nitrate.

Also you say you add the root tabs twice a month, that is overkill for sure. Once every two months should be fine, but the plants will tell you. Most of the plants look like some variety of Amazon sword - the tall ones look like E.Bleheri or E.cordifolius be easier to tell once they have settled, the small ones are maybe E.tenellus, however all are heavy root feeders so will do well without water column ferts (provided everything else is in balance).

You are running a lot of light (390W on full chat) and without water column fertilising and CO2 you may run into algae probs so worth keeping an eye on that.

Nice 'scape. :)

Speaking of algae I actually adjusted the light today from 5 hours for them all on to just 3 hrs for all of them on. I wanted a little algae to keep the shrimp fed because I only feed 2 times a day with small feedings so I know the shrimp really dont have anything to eat other than what grows in the tank. Trying to find the new balance now that things are a lot less hectic lol. The reason why I want a fert wit no nitrate is because I would rather feed the fish a little more but because my fert gives nitrate I cant do that. If that makes any sense so if anyone has any info on any ferts with out nitrate that has been successful please let me know.

Well how about this question can anyone tell me if I stopped putting root tabs and let the plants get the nutrients just from fish wastes and me just adding seachem flourish Excel would the plants continue growing better or worse any input is much appreciated thanks in advance everyone :)

You would have better luck asking on the planted tank forum or aquatic central. Good luck sorry I can't help but both of those forums have great friendly people that would be able to help you im sure!

I've tried both in my tanks and I always see much better growth with root tabs. I think they have a larger spectrum of plant nutrients than fish waste alone.

I've gone back and forth in the same tank: root tabs for six months with great growth, then forget and don't replace them for 6 months until I notice my plants look scraggly and horrible. Not so much of an experiment as laziness ;)

Since I like to vacuum the gravel pretty thoroughly I use liquid ferts plus a nutrient enhanced substrate specifically for the plants (Eco-Complete/Flourite/etc.) The discus are happy, I take trimmings to my LFS every week so all seems well :) The other nice thing about the liquid ferts is I can change the water as often as I like without worrying about the plants not getting enough nutrients; I do 25% every day in my 90G planted tank.
