ACA 2011 thoughts..............
It is always great to put faces to people you have been online friends with and also to see those you only get to see once a year. There were about 40 discus entered in the show. By far the largest class entered. That was awesome. Chad, Jerry, John, Jim, Rich, Willie and I manned the NADA table over the weekend. We signed up quite a few new NADA members. We talked with a lot of non discus hobbist that are interested in Discus. Number one reason they currently don't keep discus..................they are scared because discus are difficult. We have a lot of myths to debunk. We met a lot of venders who are now interested in coming to Atlanta 2012. There was a lot of interest from people wanting to attend Atlanta 2012. No heaters in the tanks and they weren't allowed, water was cold. WON'T be that way in Atlanta 2012. Ken Davis did a great job representing NADA as the NADA sponsored speaker. Kids tank decorating contest sponsored by Discus Hans was a huge success. Every kid that entered was a winner and is going home with their complete 20 gallon kit, decorations and fish. Hans is the Man!! Our NADA table was in one of the prime locations so everyone was exposed to us. Thank you John Nicholson and Jim Hall for taking on the task of judging the Discus division. I got to tag along with them and they taught me a lot.

WE ARE ABSOLUTELY STOKED!! NADA Atlanta 2012 is going to be awesome. If you haven't already started making your plans you need to.

ACA 2011 thoughts..............
Kids tank decorating contest sponsored by Discus Hans was a huge success. Every kid that entered was a winner and is going home with their complete 20 gallon kit, decorations and fish. Hans is the Man!!

Yup, this was great! My kids went home with a tank. We were busy deciding where to put yet another tank as they both have a tank in their rooms. The tank was placed in mom's study and now, mom is very happy and when mom's happy, I am very happy. Hans was emailing me about the contest since May and I am glad we got to participate. It was difficult walking away from the convention without buying a discus. Really wanted to get one of Hans' show fish. :) Thanks, Hans again.

Hmm, might just have to see if any of the area Simply friends want to road trip to Atlanta next year. The ACA show last year here in WI as far as discus goes was pretty disappointing. Fortunately it was the first show I'd ever attended, so there was still plenty to take in and some good people to meet. RockRiverfish and Willie just to mention 2.

Nothing can compare with a good NADA show if it's done well like it was in Dallas. It looks to be a good one in Atlanta next year. Our NADA guys are working hard to make it wonderful.

John, I hope that you don't have to judge it. It is harder work than people know. It is VERY hard work! Still, I hope that you will walk through the show room with me in a leasurly fashion with score cards in hand and teach me a thing or two.

My wife and I were innocently walking down the street in Silver Spring (godawwfuuuull heat) when 3 disreputable, I mean 3 really outstanding citizens, introduced themselves to us. Larry, John and Chad, I think (although at my age, remembering names is about as likely as winning the Lotto!). I was wearing the SimplyDiscus T-shirt, so they sort of figured we were headed to the Crown Plaza. Great meeting you guys, and the rest of the NADA crew at the table on the 4th floor, where EVERYBODY had to pass in order to get to the dinner. Good placement indeed.

The talk by Ken Davis was excellent, in my opinion. He displayed several maps of the Amazon basin, from Bolivia, Peru, Colombia and Ecuador down through Brazil, and spoke about the geographical influences on the fish. He went into genetic markers for the fish, arguing that there really aren't different species of discus, just one discus with different colorations. It's great to listen to well informed discus people, it's too bad that he's moved away from keeping them (his home water source is now too alkaline, and so he's moved into other cichlids).

Good to see Hans there, doing what he does for the kids ( and us old kids, too). Thanks, Hans. Great show, Pat! You guys rock.

I too am looking forward to the Atlanta show next June. We've never been there, so it will be a great excuse to make more friends and learn more about the fish.

Kingdom Come Discus Haven (Kraig) has IMO the most beautiful one. Top quality shirt. Gorgeous graphics. The BIDKA ones are of excellent quialty. They even have sizes for diminutive people like me! I don't have a Simlpy one so I cannot comment on them. The NADA ones aren't much. Seek and you shall find.

When I go out casual but tasteful I wear Kraig's. It's like wearing a piece of art.

He displayed several maps of the Amazon basin, from Bolivia, Peru, Colombia and Ecuador down through Brazil, and spoke about the geographical influences on the fish. He went into genetic markers for the fish, arguing that there really aren't different species of discus, just one discus with different colorations. It's great to listen to well informed discus people, it's too bad that he's moved away from keeping them (his home water source is now too alkaline, and so he's moved into other cichlids).

Good to see Hans there, doing what he does for the kids ( and us old kids, too). Thanks, Hans. Great show, Pat! You guys rock.

I too am looking forward to the Atlanta show next June. We've never been there, so it will be a great excuse to make more friends and learn more about the fish.

Kingdom Come Discus Haven (Kraig) has IMO the most beautiful one. Top quality shirt. Gorgeous graphics. The BIDKA ones are of excellent quialty. They even have sizes for diminutive people like me! I don't have a Simlpy one so I cannot comment on them. The NADA ones aren't much. Seek and you shall find.

When I go out casual but tasteful I wear Kraig's. It's like wearing a piece of art.

If you didn't know about it you really missed out. It was the brain child of our very own Discus Hans. I don't know all of the manufacturers that participated, but maybe Hans can fill that part in. Anyway he arranged to have 20 complete 20 gallon setup donated. These were the nice all one unit kinds of deals where it had the filter and light all built in. The kids got to pick their own gravel, plants, rocks, etc to go in their tanks. We then divided the fish up among the kids. The kids were thrilled. The contest was setup so that the best tank would be declared the winner and that child would win the tank and everything in it. Of course that is where the problem occurred.... The judges could not decide which tank was the best so all 20 were declared the winner. Now you want to alk about some happy, happy kids. Anyway it was a great thing to see.

If you take into consideration that discus were one third of the fish in the show and off that group, Hans brough at least 75% of the stock, they should have been treating him with a bit more respect in my oppinion...
Chad, did I hear you got that phenomenal ring pigeon home with you? I am jealous!

Guys 1 note here, Phil from the ACA apologized for not mention the kids tanks at the banquet. Things happen.

We want to thank Linda, Willie and Chuck with setting up the tanks. Linda was perfect with the little hang on back filters that are a little to small for my big hands lol lol lol

Willie taught me how to get power on a power strip and that you need to plug them in to get a pump running, THANKS Willie.

We drained a lot of 10 gallon tanks into 20 gallon tanks and 95% was a good score lol lol

John & Jim thanks for your help catching the fish for the kids, anything smaller as a 2.5" Discus is to fast for me.

And Charlie............ what can I say?.................. if one of the kids got out of line, Charlie was there to put them back with one word, now we know who keeps John straight.

It was nice meeting Joanne, finally. She is a wonderful person. Better than advertised. First thing Sophia said to Joanne was this "I like your necklace." I didn't even know who Sophia was talking to at the time, but Sophia already knew who Joanne was. One of the judges. :-)

yeah that fish is gorgeous. i remember when i was planning to go see her stock personally she sent me videos and pics she took of the blood diamond and i was in love! just wasnt ready to let go of 300 bucks. but definitely plan on getting one soon
