I live in a small, upstairs, apartment. Is there an RO unit that I can use in this case?

Yes the type of r/o unit are looking for is called a bare bones r/o. I'm not saying to buy this one but it is an example of one. http://www.petsolutions.com/storefront/fish/aquarium-supplies/conditioners-ro-purification/10-gpd-tfc-bare-bones/prod10gpdTFCBareBones.html# If you do a search you can probably find one that is rated for a lot more gallons per day.

As long as you have a water source, you can use any RO unit that is available for hobbyists, they all can be had with faucet adapters. There are hundreds of good sources out there, check some of the many posts in the water section for sources and brands, many of our sponsors here sell high quality, inexpensive units.

Thanks. I think I'll need around 100 gallon a day capacity.

out of curiousity, have you thought about where to store 100 gals of water in a small apartment?

I have no where to store water that is why I thought the portable unit would work.

the water trickles out of an ro unit or at best a slow stream. the water has to be caught in some sort of storage container or dribbled directly into the tank but then you will need some sort of dosing setup to remineralize the ro water

I don't recall doing anything to the water when I used RO for my tanks some 30 years ago.

What, then, might be the best way to bring the ph and hardness down without adding chemicals with each water change?

Rdub,

Click Here (http://www.eliteaquaria.com/Discus_RO_Units_s/44.htm) to see the RO units that I sell. Like Jerry mentioned I am also not the fan of the Portable units but I do sell one for those who like that option. My recommendation would be either the Typhoon or the compact.
