i am setting up an approx. 100 gallon aquarium for my discus (steaing someones idea from the site :) ) with a diy stand
i wanted to get probably 2 canister filters so i can use inline heaters to reduce a cluttered look as this will be my show tank
i am having trouble deciding on canister filter to get, what do people here have most success with and also is fluval a recommended brand... the tank will be either barebottom or stand with a nice peice of driftwood to keep it simple.... also what are good types of inline heaters for canister and as well as recommended temp probe/ controller to switch of heater if temp. becomes to high or turn on if it becomes to low?

this will be one of my first actual show tank also will be first serious discus tank and want to try to waste as little money as possible as i want to have money for fish... please reply and any advice/critique is welcome and appreciated

thanks

I have been using these for 2 years now and love them. I am using two of these with two hydor inline 300watt heaters. Nothing is hanging in the tank but the inlet and outlet clean setup.

how big is your tank? do you use a temperature controller/probe to ensure temperature remains stable at all times

very happy with my ehiem 2217. its on a 75 gallon. its rated for over 100 gallon tanks so i would think it might do the job for you. good luck.

yes i have also heard good things on ehiem. I took this idea for the tank from i think (discus-noob), but i wont be going for wilds just yet, i want to do sand substrate, black background, driftwood, 1 or 2 canister filters with inline heater, tank will be 100 gallons so idk how much wattage of a inline heate i will need, i salso wanted to get one of those probes/tenmp controllers that monitors the tanks temp to insure it always stays stable

I had this on a 92 gallon corner tank and did not use a temp controller the one hydor inline 300 watt heater kept the tank right on 82. The other was just for backup incase the first one failed.

I've been using a Marineland C530 since Feb and it's been real good so far. 4 real deep trays and they say no bypass.

Fluval FX5s have been on sale lately for $200, you will only need 1 on a 100g and you won't ever have to upgrade.

Might want to look into the Pennplax cascade line. I've been using them for 2+ years with excellent results, and Harriet, a very long time discus keeper and contributor, has used them for much longer. Check the tanks & equipment section for current threads. They're bargain priced from Kensfish, one of our sponsors, whose service is terrific.

Ken fish also has the Marineland C530 for $192. http://www.kensfish.com/product196.html

I used the FX5 and still have it as a backup but the C530 has done a great job for me. The only drawback is they use a non-standard size hose.

I've used eheim classics (2217's, 2215's) for more years than I want to remember. IMHO they are the best bang for buck going, extremely simple and extremely efficient. They have quite literally stood the test of time.

Its a great canister FX5, only thing I don't like is the maintenance part as it is hard to do it without a mess, but other then that its great which I have on my 210 and keeps it clear all week. I also have the Marineland on my other tanks and they are very good had them for about two years and still working strong.

I have eheim classics 2217 and 2215 as well. I like them because they are super silent. The filter pads can be expensive.

That's a decent deal. I would buy it if I had my heart set on Canisters. I'm not a fan any more of them b/c I think they're a pain to clean.

okay so i found some eheim 2215 on marine depot here at this link
http://www.marinedepot.com/filters_eheim_classic_canister_external-ap.html

gallon tank setup by discus-n00b he used 2x eheim 2217

is it suggested to use two of these eheim 2215 canisters it is rated for 92 gallons but i noticed on the 100 on my 100 gallon tank? i dont want it to be to hard of a current but also dont want a too less sufficient filter

im sure you could direct the spray bars in a creative way to maintain a mellow current for the fish. i use a 2217 plus ac70 on my 75 gallon without issue. plus power head and airstone.
