Hello all. Let me start out by saying how glad I am to have found such a wealth of information on this board. I bought two discus today a blue turquoise and a red marlboro. They are in a 56 gal aquarium with a Rena filstar Xp3 with a mixture of RO/Tap water that has been cycled. I've had aquariums since as long as a I can remember. I have a Koi pond also. I love fish. :)

In the past I was into tree frogs and chameleons and got tired of keeping live food all the time. I'm looking forward to learning more about Discus and becoming a good member of this board.

Hope top get some pictures up soon.

Thanks everyone,

-Ted

My RO system came with the house when I bought it and it's sloooow. I think I need a new membrane. Working in making a stock pile of RO water. I also had other plans for the tank when I originally filled it up and did not use 100% RO water The discus are about 2.5-3in in size. I bought them from my LFS so I have no idea on the quality of the fish, but they look in really good shape.

As long as they make you happy. I started with 4 and am up to 16 discus now. It becomes an addiction. Are they getting along or is one bulling the other?

They are getting along quite well. I plan on adding one more tomorrow. I'm already addicted.

I like the pattern of the Pigeon Blood varieties. I'd like to have a variety of colors.

I have 3 pb myself. The only bad thing one was trying to breed with 1 of my turks. I seperated them and am trying to force pair the pbs. If I let the turk and pb breed the offspring would have a lot of pepper.

Welcome aboard indeed Ted. As you read through the forum you're going to run across information that often suggests having discus in groups of 6 or more to help spread out the aggression that normally eventually occurs with discus. Just something to think about as you move forward. Also there's a lot of good information on quarantine procedures. Adding discus one at a time, from different sources, etc. can end up a lot like playing Russian Roulette. RO water generally isn't needed unless you're breeding discus. The biggest things with water are keeping the parameters consistent and plenty of water changes. Happy learning and discus keeping.

Welcome Ted! I predict your two discus will be just the beginning. I also have a Koi pond, great fish aren't they? Pics?

the pigeon based fish are pretty clean. (not to much peppering) the other I might be inclined to call a red turk... are they from different source's?

Yes two different LFS's. One close to my house and one is 90 miles to the north of my house.

The one is a blue turquoise and the other was labeled as a red marlboro, but his entire body is creamy white. Could he just be immature and not have all his coloring yet? The one I bought today was labeled as a red pigeon.

You should be good at 15. Isn't 10 the magic number?

That many Discus will require a tank larger than the 56 gal one I currently have. lol

I think she was talking about posts, but your pictures were already posted, so I'm a tad confused. Of course Pat and that pesky crow or hers have confused me more than once. (You'll have to go to her Homesteader section and read her crow story sometime.)

More likely I didn't read the entire thread and missed the pictures. Of course the crow is rather distracting. Yes, Keith is right. I meant number of posts. Sorry for the confusion.

At the time of me wanting to post my pictures I did not have the required ten posts. Hence the two posts. There is a method to my madness.

Be careful shopping in LFS for Discus in Indiana, as that's home turf for RainForestInternational; somewhat of a four letter word in these parts. That fish probably wasn't from him; it's still alive....Gary
