Tetra whisper 10/20 filter...question about noise

This is for my girls small 10 gal community tank with a 10/20 whisper power hob filter...It is really making alot of racket, if i hold down on the uptube where it seats in the groove, it quiets right down...any fixes or diy bandaids?? I know that its not a very expensive model, Is there a better one? Should i go with the water bottle power head diy filter? thanks Josh

Is this an old filter? Sometimes the impeller can cause it to rattle too much. I'm trying to picture what you're doing and what it could be... have you tried putting some kind of cushion between the tank wall and the filter? Sounds like the body of the filter may be shaking a little and tapping on the glass..(?).


That's all I can think of... you could try other filters I suppose.

Try taking the impeller out cleaning it and the hole it seats into.

hehe, yeah, TNT finished my thought... in older filters, you need to clean or replace the impeller :)

I bought one used on CL and it made a lot of noise. I replaced the impeller and it's very quiet now.

+1 clean the impeller, you will be surprised how much gunk is in there especially if you havent cleaned it ever

I cleaned it, but still making a vibration rattle....if I hold down on the tube it goes away...I wedged a small piece of plastic between the tube and the filter to stabilize the tube and it quieted right nicely !!!!!thanks for the comments, I found one new on ebay so i have a new one coming...I plan on swapping out the sponge and filter cart. and use the new one Josh
