I have been thinking about getting some discus for my 75 gal tank. I currently have 1 bristlenose pleco, 9 diamond tetras and one pearl gourami. I will be swapping out the pearl gourami with my pair of apistogrammas and their 2 month old babies soon and then wanted to add some discus in January.
The diamonds are like pirhanas at feeding time and the food is gone in a matter of seconds. I am already concerned the gourami is not getting enough food, how will the discus do? Am I not feeding enough?

they will not due well. discus are slow feeders.

So if I want to make it work I would need to over feed and do a lot of water changes then? Or is it just not possible?

Diamond tetras may work but watch the discus are getting enough food.

You also will have to watch your temps. I kept mine with discus at 82 and they did ok. In the summer when the tanks would get a little warmer, they would slowly die.I didn't have an issue at feeding time. It may be because my discus were juvies and I fed 3-4 times a day. The diamonds were not as frantic!! I loved the look as well. Very pretty fish.

Forgot to say the apistos would work well with the discus.

i have 16 diamonds in my tank. hasnt been long just a few weeks. i can tell you so far that the discus gets more than their fair shares since i hand feed 2x a day and the tetras dont bother them when the good stuff is in the tank. discus arent slow eaters. mine are eating machines. healthy fish eats ;) mine gets to the food before the tetras do lol.

feed 3-4 times a day with 50-75% water change every 1-2 days and you will be fine. i worry more about my tetras starving than the discus but all in all havent lost one fishyet

The Diamond Tetras are suited for less warm water than discus. Bad choice as tankmates.

diamonds do fine in 82F and so do discus.

Agreed with above especially adult discus.

dont know why so many people keep discus at such high temps. they do fine at 82. healthy discus do not need high temps. diamond tetras are beautiful especially when they age. if your afraid of them eating all the food. just over feed. once the diamonds get their food the discus can eat the rest.

the only concern i have with mine is that all the swimming the diamond does might scare the discus but so far mine been fine

I'm sure you are right, fishcrazed, in spite of the fact that all literature states otherwise. 82F is the max temp that they will survive, however, 78-79F is where they do "fine". They survive as low as 75F, too, but that doesn't mean they are "fine" at that low of a temp. So, with the scientific data recorded and my 51 years in the hobby, maybe I just changed my mind about you being right.

And, BTW, you don't need to tell me anything about where and how discus do fine. I know. I've done it. Smile now, and question posts by people who say "what will I get if I cross a PB with a BD".

trust me diamonds can "survive" in much higher than just 82f i have my tank at 84 and they school and appears to be happy and "fine" so 82 will be "fine" for them

Right now I have my tank with the diamonds, BN pleco, and 1 gourami at 78. I was going to buy the discus in a few weeks so I was thinking of increasing the temp by 1 every week until it gets to 82. Will that be ok for the fish at that rate of increase?

Cant see why not. They are fairlybhardy fish and should cope fine.

I think that would be fine.
