So I bought a water python so that when I buy my discus the water changes will be much easier. I do not need to age the water before I put it into the tank because the water in my area is very soft and has a pH of 7 right out of the tap. So how is it that putting water from the tap right into the tank will not kill the BB? The guy at my LFS said to put the dechlorinator in the tank first then add the water and it will be fine but I am not 100% convinced.
Opinions? Advice?

For one of those rare occasions, I agree with the LFS guy. Put the dechlo. first, then the water.

Since I'm a member of the 'Bucket Brigade', I put the dechlo. in the first bucket.

If your on well water you dont need dechlorinator. Just use direct from tap. Just watch pH fluctuations if it`s soft. Mines quite hard but pH remains stable right out of the tap.

Remember to dose for the whole tank.If your doing 50%-75%,you put in for 100%.

Why do you dose for the whole tank and not just the water you are replacing?

Because those are the directions on the bottle.

Are you on a well with anyone?

If so you should rethink that because if one of your neighbors decide to shock their well it can kill your fish.

I've seen it happen.

I don't have well water. I use PAT water cond and it soed not say anything about dosing for the water that is already in the tank and has already been treated.

It doesn't matter what you use.

If you are adding 10 gallons of new water to a 20 gallon tank and the new water is untreated tap water you are supposed to dose for the total tank volume. 20 gallons .

If your water is aged in a 10 gallon barrel you should treat that 10 gallon barrel only and add it to the tank. So you would only be treating the new water before it goes into the tank.

Think of it as 10 miles of road.If you repair 5 miles, you still need gas to travel the 10 miles. If going straight into the tank from tap,it disperses, and you need to treat the whole volume.
