Currently in my 85 gallon tank, I have 2 Hydro V sponge filters, and an Eheim 2217 (which is new, so the bacteria hasn't built up yet), and a Penguin 350 Bio-Wheel.

The Penguin 350 is actually producing more flow than the Eheim 2217, since my aquarium rim is pretty thick.

If I were to remove the Penguin 350 and keep the Eheim 2217 and Hydro V's would that be adequate filtration for an 85g tank with 5 Discus?

Thanks!

How long have the sponges been in there? The sponges alone should be good for 5 discus with proper waterchanges. Eheim 2217 is rated for 159 gallons so depending on the media used and if it where cycle it to would be more than enough.

The Hydro V's have been in there for probably 6 months or so, and how long would you say the Eheim would need to be cycled?

Also would it be fine without the Emperor 350?

Thanks for the quick reply!

Hydro V's good for 5 discus? They are rated for 125 gal. Two of these sponges are all the filtration this 85 gal tank needs.

Hard to say. When you have over filtration who can tell if one filter is doing more of the filtration than another. But the hangon prob. moses more water so if sized big enough I would think it might be doing more. But if it were me Id take it off if I wanted to. You may get an ammonia spike though so I'd be prepared for that.

Imo there is no such as being overfiltered. worst case scenario you have extra filters and cycled media worst case you have extra cycled filters and media. its a win win. A mature bb colony will multiply quite quickly
