I'm thinking a 20 gallon for a hospital and 29 gallon for a QT. What are you thoughts and opionions on this? Also, what do you suggest for a filter? Both will be BB. Basic lighting and heating?

QT for what kind of fish? How many? What size?

Sounds pretty standard to me. Sponge filters imo for both. =)

This would be a general all purpose setup. Discus, Cories, BN, whatever I need to quarintine.

QTs should last 4-6 weeks for new fish. I just got 6 discus that are around 4.5-5" each. They would not do well for that long in a 29 gal. If you really want an all purpose you need to think about how big of a tank you might need. Better to buy a slightly larger than what you think you might need then having to buy a second tank down the road because the one you have is not big enough.
For a hospital tank 20 gal would be good. Someone on here told me that if more than a couple of my discus were sick then I should just medicate the whole tank rather than use a hosp. tank.

I Qt for a minimum of eight weeks, usually a little longer. You haven't mentioned the size or amt. of fish for either setup. That said, if you know your stuff, you can keep them fine in a barrel!..I wouldn't recommend it, just saying. About your 29..I've QT'd boocoo fish in one at times; it's just back to upkeep and wc's..I have a few sizes of tanks for hosp. use, but I favor several 20's for a small number of sickies. In the saltwater kingdom, it's known as Hyposalinity, but for feshwater, I swap fish between tank when doing some treatments to guarantee no excess pathogens in the water, and if it's a parasite thing, less chance of reinfestation from eggs or trophants..JME..Gary

As far as hosp tanks go, I don't use a filter when medicating. I don't feed during treatment and maintain water quality by performing large WCs. I only keep a heater and air stone in them.

As for QT tanks, again large somethimes mutiple WCs a day to maintain good water quality as stated by Gary

Sorry to hijack the thread, but I have a Discus around 4" that needs to be put in a Hospital tank, would a ~10 Gal Barebottom be suitable?

I have one 4 incher in a 10 gallon, it works great for me. Less meds and 100% water changes.
