How often should potted plants be taken out to change the soil to avoid the dangerous gases that build up in the soil. Also if I decide to stop using the soil and just plant the plants in the gravel will the plants suffer greatly ?

There should be no build up of any gasses with plants in pots. Like terrestrial plants in pots they can become pot bound so may need re-potting once in a while, once a year should be fine. There will be no problem going from pot to substrate.

You do not need to worry about pockets of gas when you have the roots from the plants there.
If it is a discus tank it will be much easier to keep clean if you have the plants in pots instead of gravel or plant substrate on the bottom of the tank.

Can somebody please respond to the question about just using a pot and gravel and perhaps a fertilizer tab over soil? Will plants NOT do as well if they are not in soil? TY! Julia
