View Full Version : My new 90gal!

Hello everyone!

I swaped my 125gal with Jim during the NEDA meeting for his 90gal. We both came out happy!
The cabinet built by Jim is very nice so I tought...why not set it up as a show tank for the only fish I have left...my personal wilds!

The background is an Aquaterra 3d thinline I got from Hans a while ago in one of our many deals, that has been sitting here just begging to be used, I placed the 2 Sera heaters behind the background and am using airtones to move the water from behind the background through the tank, by creating the current I don't end up with stagnant water behind the background. I left the background a tad under the water line so the water can move about freely. There are small holes on the bottom so water can totalt circulate.

The sand in the bottom is pool filter sand, very clean and heavy enough that it stays in place during syphoning. I burried two clay caves for the plecos, once the wood goes in the tank they will most likely not be seen.

Filtration is done via 2 HOB Aqua Clears, the intake tubes are the only thing you will see as far as equipment inside the tank, the thermometer in the front is just temporary, it will leave soon enough.

I have ordered wood from PC1, as soon as it arrives I will finish the tank and then add the fish...can't wait! My fish are not happy in the 30 long they currently reside!
Hope you like it!

The tank is looking good Rod. As far as stocking it goes, I know there is some Jersey Shore Guido Discus or something out there and whats that other one, something about the Origin of Discus in the Florida Everglades ? I would go with Snook. :)

Thanks guys! I did not want to move the fish in untill the wood came in and I could finish setting everything up, but the fish were visually stressed so I had no choice...

Matt this background is worthy or the work to set it up, really sets the tank appart!

roclement

home depot playsand, the dark color goes well with the tank opposed to white aquarium sand.

Like this tank and the background is a perfect fit. The fish are marvelous. Rodrigo, arrange the dw to help mash the filter inlet if possible. Took another look and couldn't see the inlets

You wont find them! The only visible thing int the tank are the two thermometer sensors, one on each side, nothing else.

So the background is not thinline, but it is thicker and allows you to hide equipment. I think you have Aquaterra's rainforest background, right?

Hey, Rod, that's a great looking tank. I've just cleaned out my whole system, and am thinking about a 3D background for my 125g. I should have talked with Jim about his experience that one he gave you, I was just up there! Quick question, have you thought about what to do if, (and when) things get grungy behind that wall? Thanks. -Don

roclement

Don, the background came from Hans, the tank came from Jim.
I did not glue the background so if I have the need, I can remove it.

OK, thanks. I'll check with Hans re maintenance long term. If it's not glued, is it a single piece, just sort of placed in the back? Thanks.

roclement
02-19-2012, 05:54 PM
Two pieces, cut from a single piece set in place very tight. I have two airstones running behind so water flows from small holes on the sides and over the top.
I also have one AC intake behind the background returning into the main tank so not only I avoid stagnant water, but also move the heated water to the main tank.

Just to clear it up with some people. This background is an Aquaterra background, not Designs by Nature. http://www.notjustfish.com/AQUATERRA/3D-Deluxe/Rainforest.html Both companies make nice ones I'm told and from what i've seen. My question Rod is, is the background a flat panel on the back or is it contoured with the roots and hollow? Not sure if that was clear lol. Can it press right up against the glass in all spots or is there space between the background and glass inside of all of the roots?

roclement

Matt,

You are correct! Aquaterra!

The back is not flat, it follows the grooves of the root system. Since I did not seal the back I have the intake of one of the aqua clears behind the background and the return into the main tank. I also have two airstones behind the background to keep water moving. I also have a notch on one of the sides, and 2 passing spots on the bottom so water can circulate freely, along with the plecos.

I chose to do this so all gear is out of sight, two heaters are hidden behind the background and with the circulation the tank water stays between 82 and 83. In the display you only see 2 thermometer sensors, nothing else.

Thanks Rod and Bill. I'm looking for a flat back, because I wanted to try the magnet method of attachment. Paid a lot of money for this tank and the glass....really don't want to silicone it in.

Bill63SG
03-11-2012, 12:09 PM
A lot of people pressure fit thiers in.On Designs web site they have a tutorial, but I did'nt tape the bottom of my tank,so the silicone was sloppy, and couldnt make it work.

Discus-n00b
03-11-2012, 12:40 PM
I just don't have any center brace or rim on my tank, so silicone or magnets are the only choices for me lol.

Rod, is whats in there now the final stocking? Anything else planned?

It looks even better on video. The fish are much more outgoing than I thought they would be. They don't appear to be shy at all. I love the simplicity of the set up. I am willing to bet that maintenance is going to be quite easy. On that note, for future updates, could you keep us posted on that aspect of your aquarium as well?
