I have a 180 tank that is drilled it has two 1" drains and two 3/4" returns. I know head pressure and all that play a factor in the pump size but I am just wondering on what GPH should I shoot for?

should aim to turn the tank over 4 to 6 times an hour

That is what I was thinking but someone told me to get a 2200 gph pump and I thought that was a little to much.
I tried rio 32hf pump 1920GPH on my 180g tank that way too much for 2x 1 1/2" drained holes and 2x 1" returns from 40 g sump. I m running a rio20 1200gph now seem very good So 2200 gph is way too strong.

That is good news since that means a cheaper pump :D

Id put a ball valve on the pump so you can cet the flow to your liking!

I was thinking of a Mag 18 after the head pressure I should be getting around 1000-1200 gph

I use around 1500 gph total, split between two smaller pumps (one pump for each of the two returns) on a 240 gal. containing wild discus.

My use is a Mag 18 from Kensfish on a 180 containing a dozen Heckel crosses. Works just fine for my sump setup.
