I have ran in to a little problem with my water becoming green. The last time it turned green my phosphate level was extremely high I used a phosphate remover and i had clear water again. Now im back to green water and the phosphate remover doesnt seem to help. I did recently added new light bulds to tank but i redeuced the hours that there on a day due to the intensety of the new bulds. I do 10gallon water changes a day and do a major water change on the weekends. Any ideas to rid of the green water?

How big is your tank? how many fish?

UV sterilizer worked for me. I tried black out...but to no avail. You are right that it was probably your new bulbs. You could try a blackout first along with big water changes.

UV, or blackout for a week I believe, but UV works very well.

Blackout means you even cover the tank 24/7

my tank is a 65 tall with 5 discus, 5 rummy nose, 1 cory cat. Now with doing the balck out for a week what about the live plants i have in there? I did reduce how long the light is on for from 12 hours to 8 hours a day and i have been doing water changes.

So then you need to buy a UV

I'm being true here but im not shure how a UV works or are the exspensive to run? Are they a one time thing? Most of this is all new to me.

I did when i First got the new high output light, but i have always seemed to have had a problem with cloudy water as well. I just did a 80% water change and when you look through the side of the tank it is still green like i didnt even do a water change

I just bought the green killing machine from petsmart. Can't remember how much it cost, but it wasn't that much. I used for 2-3 weeks, though the green water was gone in about a week. This was after my blackout didn't work and my plants looked like crap because of the blackout. So, to me it was worth it. It just goes inside the tank...don't have to have a canister.

Just relaying my experience. I have never had antoher issue.

stepcps I went to mody dick and they have a in the tank one for $99. I was planning on getting a canister so when i do i will be getting the inline one. I did manage to get my tank clear today. I did another 80% water change this morning and when i came home from running some errands my green was almost gone. I just hope i can keep it that way not being able to enjoy the beauty of my discus make me very upset. :(

Hi,
Same happened to my 55gl. Go get ALGAEFIX (controls algae growth in aquariums) from Petland $8. Its will go way within 1 hour.
Good luck:)

Do some reading about ALGAEFIX. Some people have had issues with it affecting their Discus.
