I am hoping that I have finally managed to show you my problem. I hope you can see the small shavings of wood under and around the closeup shot of the sand under the wood. Could it possably be waste from 1 baby bn cat fish?

oh one other thing. when you do the insert image thing here. remove the check on the "Retrieve remote file and reference locally" box.. otherwise you will get an error message.

I must thank you for your patience ( especially you Warlock), and apologise for my ignorance. The question is now mute because sadly, my bn catfish died, so I can now know if it is, or isnt, waste from him! I thought they were a very hardy fish. He was only 2 months old! Any suggestions on a replacement? I have 3 cory catfish, 7 cardinal tetras (and WOW are they pretty) and of course 4 juvie discus!

my manzanita sheds too. I just take it out periodically and give it a scrub. some people pressure wash theirs I believe.
I don't think it's harmful stuff, that shedded debris (?). because my tank is bare bottom, I can easily vac the stuff up. not sure how it works with substrate - perhaps a gravel vac?

My older pieces of manzanita is crumbling apart. My new stuff is holding up well. It's wood, it rots eventually. Wood and water is not a good combo.

Yes....I do vacuum, but with a fine sand substrate it's hard to get the debri without the sand. Since my baby bn catfish died, there is MUCH LESS debri, which must mean that most of it was waste from my wood eating b.n.catfish. Hard to believe he could create that quantity of wood waste, but, he's no longer there and neither is the debri!! I can't figure out why he died..he was only 2 months old!! He will be missed.....but not his waste!!!!

I would get 3 or more corys since they MUST be in shoals of at least 5-6 to be healthy and happy. Besides they will not make as much of a mess as plecos.

All That bn catfish would eat was my manzanita wood...he wouldn't come off of it. I attempted to feed him Algie wafers, and of course there was always plenty of food in there for my discus, such as fdbw, tetra bits, ciclid crisps, brine shrimp and new life spectrum discus formula, which the entire tank feeds on....except my little bn cat fish, who only ate wood. Perhaps he did starve warlock. What di you think?
