I was finally able to watch the Tefe's spawn. It has always happened while at work. I have two spawning video updating now but here is a pre-spawning clip from this morning. The male is different from the original male so here he is a first timer. I will post the other two videos once they have been fully uploaded.

Turned on the light briefly to check the condition of the eggs. So far they look perfect.

wow!!! :D
"spawning" refers to the actual 'egg laying' process, is that correct? then the male fertilizes?
(sorry if that's a stoopid question!)

what an exciting pairing - love the vids & photos :)

I think he is too. He is working on this new daddy role. Definitely tell he is a first timer. I will drop food in the tank and mom will go to eat. Dad who is fanning the eggs will go to eat too. The female will notice him and go rushing back to the eggs in a big hurry. Would love to know what she is thinking at that precise moment.

The eggs are in perfect condition. Appears that the new dad covered them well. Only one white egg.

So four white eggs this morning and all the rest of the eggs appear excellent. 48 hour mark this afternoon.

The new male has proven himself. The pair were tending about 60 to 80 wigglers this morning.

Hey Dave, these guys seem to be turning the heads of a lot of folks...even the heads of non-wild discus keepers. :D

The wigglers are working on going free swimming but so far the parents are keeping them corralled up. The male is in the background and looking at where the wigglers are on the wood. They look like a fuzzy patch on the wood in this video. If you look close you can see a few trying to get away at the beginning of the video.

Hey Pat,
first of all, congrats for your success with your greens, my greens ones just spawned once in January, but beeing in a comunity tank without success.

Here is my Question: what happens with your female... Is there a hole above the left eye? In your last video and some of your last fotos it seems to grow. Have a look for that!
Maybee you should use some Mineral salt for your water?

With best regards from Germany

Markus

Hi Markus, she has what appears as a puncture wound above her eye. It was somewhat deep and is healing from the inside out and appears shallower now and looks whitest in the video. Adding salt would help to promote healing and will later today. I am trying to avoid messing with the water parameters (raising TDS with salt) in the middle of attachment.

This time attachment may actually be successful. I am seeing alot more fry then with the three prior spawns.

I wish them and you all the best!!!

I would avoid messing with the parameters also, especialy in this stage of breedind, just mentioned it, cause i didn't notice these wound when i was reading your treads about your greens.

I hope all the best for attachment.

Markus

Thanks Markus, she has have this wound about a week or so. Think she got into the middle of a male fight but just guessing on that. She and the male are insistence on catching the fry and placing them back up on to the wood. A few have attached or am trying to with the parents busy catching other fry. I will keep a close eye on the wound and treat as prudently possible after attachment.

So left for a family dinner and had a couple of wigglers on each parent, come home tonight and find three wigglers, one on mom, one on dad and one in the sand bed. Feeling a bit jinxed here. Maybe time to setup the pair into a better controlled environment.

This is the second spawn of the Tefe female with the new male. The eggs hatched today and if you look at the wood where the female is looking she has stashed the wigglers there and you can see them wiggling along the end of the wood the second time I show her.

Jon

Jon, we will see in the next day or two. The wigglers should go free swimming today or tomorrow.

Second Hand Pat
05-16-2012, 06:31 PM
The wigglers are free swimming and there is some attachment to the parents. Both mom and dad are still rounding up wayward fry but they are moving slow :). The wound in mom's head is still there. I fear it could be HITH. :( Perhaps too much egg laying for my little girl.

Second Hand Pat
05-16-2012, 10:27 PM
Some of the wigglers feed off the parents for a while. The parents have rounded the wigglers up and stuck them on the wood for the night. I seem to remember Nandi saying they would do that the first night or two. I do believe we have another batch so quite happy about that.

Hey Jon, some say with metro also from what I have read many are not sure what causes it, maybe something missing in the diet. I could be wrong on what it is also. It does not seem to be getting worst.

Hi Pat, That's interesting I'm glad to hear that it's not getting worse, I better make sure I'm feeding my fry from Larry correctly!!! I don't want to let him down :)

Second Hand Pat

Jon, always best to feed a complete and varied diet. I am not seeing this in any other fish so "guessing" all the egg laying could be a factor.
