We had some bad storms last night with lots of big thunder and I think that is what happened. I found my 7" female hybrid ray on the garage floor dried up and dead. I am so upset about this I worked so hard to get this tank up and going and getting these rays. Working days, my wife working nights, and trying to raise a new born baby and find time to build all this has been a huge challenge and stress :( :( :( :(

Here is my lady when I got her

Aw Sean, so sorry about your lady. :( Do you know how she jumped out and maybe block it so it does not happen again.

Thanks Pat,

There are three panels on top of the tank I open or close them to help keep the temp from getting to high since the tank is out in my garage. I have had these panels open several times before and had them open for the last two days because of warm outside temps. All I can think of is the thunder and lightning must have spooked her and she jumped out.

Sean, running a fan across the water surface will help to cool the water. Use to do that for my reef tank.

I'm so sorry she was beautiful! Storms really can cause some unforeseen damages.

Sorry Sean. I work with saltwater rays at the aquarium and once in a while one will jump out of the tank, usually happens when another ray is chasing one and it is trying to get away. Do you have other rays in the tank? The storm may have indeed spooked them.

I will have to come up with something like a fan to use

Hi Barb,

Yes there is two other rays that were with her they are both smaller then her. There is two windows in my garage near the tank so I am sure the flashing lightning had something to do with it.

Thank You,

I am just taking it hard because of all the fighting I went thru with the wife to let me set all this up and buy the rays and then for something like this to happen. Feels like the wind was let out of my sails.

Fortunately I don't have to deal with a Spouse about my fish or what I do. But I can understand why your feeling like you do. I'm sure everyone here on SD can relate to your loss.

I am so sorry for your loss, that is really tough. She was very pretty too. :(
What about putting a screen over the holes (like on windows) so you can open the top open when needed but they cannot get out that way.

That is not a bad idea I will look into getting some screens and I could velcro them on so they don't get knocked of.

Thank You

Thanks Tara leason learned here for sure. The wife came home last night and told me I could buy another female if I wanted. I told her I think I will wait for a little while before spending the money on another.

It was that for sure. I owned rays for several years then last year before the baby was born I sold them. This was my first ray I owned again in over a year

Ever since my moms 2' electric eel jumped tank and I had to put him back in Ive always been a huge fan of covering every tank I owned. Not that I always remember to put the lids down lol.
I can see how a storm would do that. Mine always bury themselves when a bad storm comes through and looks like your tank is bb.
