Hi,
I try to DIY sump for my 150G tank.
My question is do I still need a filter (HOB or carnister type) to go along with it?
Sorry for noob question.
Thanks

If your sump is large enough then no

What is your suggestion?
I have 20G long that I can use to build a sump.
TIA

Hmmm. A 20 long will only hold about 12g of water if that when running. I would shoot more for a 55g tank as your sump. When petco has a sale its a good buy. I mean 12g is still much better than the capacity of any canister filter but more is always better, I'm using a 29g for my 75. I was going to get a 50-60 and use it but won't fit under stand. If you want to use that 20g you can always throw a fluval 405 or somethin and use for only mechanical and use the sump for your media. It's personal preference really.

That was very helpful. I was planning a 15g sump for a 75g I'm setting up but was unsure that is was big enough. Based on this calculation that should be fine. Thanks!
