Hello SimplyDiscus!!!
I have been keeping fish for 13 years. I started off with fresh water not knowing what to do and as I got older researched and moved to salt. I have had a reeftank set up since early 07 and is currently running as a 125g with two 20g long sumps. I have grown tired of mixing salt and dosing the tank. Im hoping to sell off my livestock and convert the tank to a discus tank.
First I want to say that I am a research nut! Since this idea was sparked again by my brother in law, I have read about 4-5 hours a day for the last week and stumbled on this site. I have also read about discus off and on for the last few years. My wishes of a planted tank have been pushed aside and surprisingly I like some of the BB tanks with drift wood and a few potted plants. Looks clean but still interesting. I have a couple questions as I start planning my tank.
I have an RO/DI unit, do I use this water, just RO water, or have also seen references of using just aged tap water?
(i need to test my straight tap water to see where its readings are)
I have a 6 bulb T-5 fixture over the tank now and have read that discus dont like bright light. Would I need all bulbs firing to grow the few potted plants I will have in the future? If not that would tone the light intensity down, Im also considering building a LED fixture as well and just focusing the light onthe plants.
If you buy a a handful of three or four color morphs and wait for them to pair up, will like colors stay together? And what should my ending total be for my 125?
Thanks, hope this is the right place for an introduction.
