View Full Version : Wild Tefe F1 Juvies "Batch A"

These Tefe F1 juvies are from the first successful spawn in the "Wild Tefe Spawn" thread. I consider these juvies to be Batch A as there is a another successful spawn where the wigglers are nine days old.

This spawn is about 40 strong and a couple of days ago I split out the larger ones from the smaller ones to give the smaller ones less food competition. The following pictures are the larger ones and there is some interesting color developing on these guys.

Just out of curiosity are they bigger than silver dollars? Are they 3"? I can't tell from the pics.

Thanks Fred, these are the larger of the fry and I know they are over 2 inches. I will put a point of reference up for the next set of pictures.

There is one fry in this video who is going to have some crazy color as it matures. Right at 53 second in look in the finnage below/above the tail. Those little markings are red.

Looking nice and round now Pat with fins erect and 'clean' bodies. I think you'll also be surprised how quickly the smaller siblings will catch up . . . A huge difference from a couple of weeks ago.

I moved three from the kiddie pool (smaller fry) to the juvie tank. The three I moved were all 2 and 1/4 inches (measured them). So either splitting the group is helping the smaller ones catch up (already?) or I am under estimating the size of the smaller fry.

I tend to do the same thing, then one day I put the growouts in with my adults and wholly Cr**, they are larger than the adults...lol.
One a side note, rather than move the largest and place them into a tank making them the smallest, I would move the smallest into another tank and make them the largest if possible. I like to keep my alpha's, well, alpha's!

Rick, I sort of did as you suggest. I split the first spawn into two tanks. The smaller ones remained in the 40 and the larger ones went into a 75. Today I moved three of the larger fry in the 40 to the 75. The fry I moved are only slightly smaller then the fry already in the 75. When I eyeball the fry in the 75 I believe I can id the three added today.

Still working 12 hours most days, but have been moved in for a while. Been mostly enjoying messing with some Angus cattle I got recently, ran new fence, etc. At this point, it'll probably be winter before I get the busted 240 gal. replaced. LOL! Fish are doing fine, so no rush. May just get another 150 gal. that matches one I already have. Twins! :D Those little guys of yours will REALLY look great by the end of the summer with much more color and size! Impressive.

Darrell, how much property do you have with the new place? So you are raising your own beef now? I have considering getting three calf's for three months out of the year in order to claim ag status (to lower property taxes). Sell two of the calf's and put the last in the freezer but with the horses just not quite enough property.

BTW there is another spawn. Wigglers are 14 days today. Same female, different male so there is a "Batch B" :D and agree that these F1 show LOTS of promise :D

So the numbers of discus don't count toward ag status?? :p

Thanks Anik, but soon I will be up to four fry tanks then things really get interesting ;) For ag status you have to produce food or fiber. I guess discus could be marketed as a pricey sushi :p

I have about 3 acres in yard, and a little over 8 acres in pasture. There are 4 in the pasture right now. The grass is green and lush from the rains, and they really seem to be enjoying it. LOL! I haven't raised beef since I helped my dad as a kid, so I'm still kinda learning.

Cool! That female is a machine! I have some wild angels from Peru I got from John before the move that are growing well. Hope to get at least a pair from that group. :D

So I woke up this morning about 4:00am :( and ended up on the computer and had a nice early morning chat with Nandi. Nandi is one of my wilds mentors and goes by NANDiscus here on simply. I followed his method in raising wilds in a large divided tank which he used with his wild Xingu's.

He is quite excited about the Batch A juvie pictures I posted on FB and he feels that I may end up with some nicely spotted fish from this batch. He also proposed raising some of the juvies outside allowing them to get some natural sunlight. Nandi suggested that natural sunlight promotes color development in the juvies.

I will admit to considering this idea in the past prior to have any discus and need to consider the issues and logistics before trying it.

It's the coons and frogs which are my primary worry critter wise. I would maintain the tank on the front porch. Definitely would need to determine if the temp swings are an issue and easy to test that.

If you're looking to duplicate sunlight spectrum in your house to promote color and not put a tank outside, why not buy a HPS light?

Second Hand Pat
06-16-2012, 08:57 PM
Look to be pricey lights taking a quick look at home depot? Actually placing the juvies outside has other advantages besides sunlight. A large pool for growing out, saving on the power bill etc. Very easy WCs. :D

And some possible cons with wildlife including frogs, coons etc. I am considering placing some test discus in the pool before adding the juvies.

Price range of 200ish depending on the watt you want. You can also use it for growing plants in tanks or just potted plants. A light just seems a bit easier than putting an entire tank outside and dealing with nature. Thats a high tech system to fight nature.

Thanks for the suggestion on the lights Cameronv. The outside tank would not be too high tech, a small above ground pool with a pump attached to a large foam block for bio and a screen to keep the fish in and the wildlife out. The weather is warm enough to keep the temp in the 80s.

I just saw some pictures over on BIDKA of some young wild greens from the Rio Nanay which are transplanted Tefes. These guys were about an inch larger then mine but forming the same coloration in the areas of the fins and spots in the belly area similar to mine. So the little reddish areas in my guys are indeed spots.

Well Pat, work has kept me from being able to watch the spawns carefully and try to help them along. Usually by the time I get home, the parents have eaten the eggs. Now I'm back in your backyard working with one more Launch (the reason I won't be able to be at NADA). I'm hoping not to have to travel again for a while and get back to my fish. This time I'll be gone for 2 weeks straight, I hope family can cope. In the mean time my three remaining fry have grown and 2 of them are still looking quite nice.. Thanks for asking, BTW I hope you have lots of fun at NADA.

Thanks Poco and Cameronv, I will admit to being super excited about the way these F1 are developing and hopefully will provide the F1A ( F1 batch A) foundation stock. Cameronv, I will like to make some of these available once the F1A breeding stock is selected. I do hope all the juvies have some spotting to offer.

You are right Marc I can not keep them all. 18 were going to Washington state but that is not happening. Some will be going to Ocala. For now I will be growing them out in a outside pool until around October then I will have to do some weeding. Let's hope I do not flood the local market too badly.

So question for you guys. Who is up for an after Christmas auction of a group of these guys. I can not say whether they will be spotted or not and they are not going to be as large as a domestic of the same age. Lots of the color development is still to come but there is lots of promise in these juvies. These are also the babies from the "Wild Tefe Spawn" and for a while were the darlings of Simply.

I think the best thing about having two good fish spawn is that the pic of the litter from the fry regardless of how large the spawn is, there is always a few fish better than the parents. That is the real fun of the hobby (to me that is!)

Pat,

On the future pairings, are you going for spots or shape? Curious to see how you take them from here.
Also, have you considered, and you may have but I can't remember, starting some crossing of these with domesics yet?

Rodrigo

Hi Rodrigo,

My intentions are to develop a nice RSG from all wild stock. Since I have do not have any highly spotted wild fish I will have to develop the foundation stock first. I will most likely go for spots first and then shape but in reality I will take advantage of whatever the fish offer me in each generation.

I think this is a great topic for discussion and perhaps should start a separate thread.

Well, I had a pretty serious setback with Batch A. I was doing a Formalin treatment on them using Al's treatment plan and used the dosage on the package and lost better then half the batch to what appears to be a overdose. What is left is pretty much back to normal but not a pleasant experience. The two most spotted ones made it so that is good news.
