View Full Version : Matt's NADA Atlanta 2012 log

This thread will be a place that I can put all of my pictures and ramblings from the show, for those that can't go and for those that can and just want to relive it. This will be much like Barb's found here http://forum.simplydiscus.com/showthread.php?97230-My-NADA-picture-thread-here. Feel free to add your thoughts/comments/photos/etc....we are all friends here.

I arrived in Atlanta today. Nice hotel. I have a nice room overlooking the airport, perfect.....time for some timelapse and aviation photography!!! Oh this is a fish convention? Well....my fish made it ok, a bit of a burn on one's tail but should be just fine. They seem to be active in the cooler right now, waiting for their color to return but that should come, hopefully by tomorrow ;). FYI, the internet at the hotel is not free so be prepared if you are looking to log on at some point, I'm addicted so I have to. Its also a bit slow.

I haven't scouted out many places to eat yet, there is a Ruby Tuesdays across the street from the hotel, for real...walk. Maybe someone else can fill us in on more.

More to come later!

I'm here too, we checked in yesterday. Ruby Tuesday is much better than the hotel food! Worth the walk! Hotel is nice otherwise! Looking forward to the pictures. We're going to the Aquarium tomorrow.

The only restaurants within driving distance is Ruby Tuesday(walking) Joe's on Sullivan(about a mile) and Waffle House.
Otherwise hop on Hwy towards airport or shuttle to airport. There's a few restaurants there.

Updates were slow today, sorry. Larry, Chad, and John roped me into helping build and setup the show tanks starting at 8am. LOL jk. But that's what we did all day. Folks let me just say I've never seen a group of more incredible fish in one single place. Florida Discus came out BIG with some really really nice ones, Mike Beals of course brought his best, Hans added to the mix, and then you have all of the individuals entering top quality fish....WOW is all I can say. You will see the fish soon, just wow. Some of them literally made multiple jaws drop. Talk about tough competition, there is no clear cut winner like you might see in most shows....this will be a tough one lol.

Going to take pictures of the setup, no individual fish shots yet. I want them to settle in before I go flashing their eyes. I should be able to get them up tonight, might be late though.

Loving it so far, everyone who couldn't/didn't come is missing out!

Very quick dirty shots taken tonight. No flash was used, giving the fish at least a day to settle in (which most seem to be doing outstanding already). So these were just taken with the ambient light. Colors may be a bit off on the fish but you get the general idea.

The sadness just got a lot worse.. That looks so unbelievably fun. I never find locals or businesses around me that are so into discus like this community. To be in one place with such a great group of fellow discus lovers, discus paraphernalia, and show fish would truly be a memorable experience. I hope you all have a great time and maybe next year I can link the faces with usernames. If I'm lucky it'll be on the west cost next time :)

ps Matt great job with the photos, I look forward to lots more.

I'm suspecting Asian RT and Piwowarski's RT, they both look great.
Each one of them have something special about them, I love them!

RT no.1 = Love the body shape and pattern, just gorgeous.
RT no.2 = Classic, so round and the straitions are so straight and beautiful, 6.5" SL, wow!
Even more wonderful on #34!

The wilds had some strong fish, don't let the pictures fool you. The wilds were VERY hard to get pictures of and most of the wilds never settled as good as the domestics. I think it was one of the weaker classes, but by no means disappointing.

Shooting iso 100-200, shutter around 1/250-1/200 and f22 will give you that with the overhead flash. ;). Im really glad it turned out like it did, the backgrounds on the tank were a very light sky blue. Thanks.

By the way I'm home and the fish are acclimating to their tank well. It's a separate QT tank for a while before they rejoin their companions.

So how long does it typically take for you to photo one fish/tank and how many shots do you take of that one tank? Is there quite a bit of setup involved?

Rick

Really depends on the fish Rick, could take a few shots, could take 30mins of shots. The only setup involved for me is a flash on top of the tank (and something to set it on if there is not a lid), and a camera in hand.

hey.. i thought you didn't pick up fish!

I brought home my show fish Skip. Skip wasn't taking any fish home either.....then he strong armed the auction. LOL

I also wanted to say that Tara's Cobalt that took First Place Solid was one of the most impressive fish in the show. It may not have been the biggest in the show, but it started as a young fish from Kenny and was grown by Tara. Really shows what good stock and good care can produce. So everyone out there who thinks they don't have a chance at these things should take notice, grow them up right and you have just as much chance to win as anyone else! Congrats again Tara, and all of the other winners.

Yun as Matt said the wilds did not show as well in his photos. I believe all who brought fish not just wilds would agree their fish look better at home than in a small bare tank with no where to hide. Mine were in bags for 28 hours and I know I am not the only one who had them bagged and boxed for an extended period of time. I wish you would have brought some of your fish to show. The more fish the better the show. I for one want to thank Matt for his huge effort in documenting a great event. He definitely does have a gift with the camera and really appreciate his efforts and his investment in equipment.

Thanks,

Jim

I don't know because I'm stupid with photography, but I think the main thin is flash from above rather than the flash on the camera. It's expensive. I'd like to know what lens would work best for my Nikkon. I have an 18 to 200 hunderd and a 50mm 1:1.8D.

I don't know because I'm stupid with photography, but I think the main thin is flash from above rather than the flash on the camera. It's expensive. I'd like to know what lens would work best for my Nikkon. I have an 18 to 200 hunderd and a 50mm 1:1.8D.

As long as we are asking, I would like to know what lense to get for my Olympus E-410 too?

Thanks again all, I used a 24-105mm lens for these pictures on a Canon 5D Mk II camera body. No macro lens, though I do have one. The shots of the whole room were done with a 14mm wide angle. And yes, flash above. IMO for aquarium photography more light is more important then a fast lens.

Hey Matt , great pics, do you recall whose fish is picture #6, in post #153 (the second red Discus). Also what strain is that, looks like a Red Valentine.

Crockett

It looks like the first one is the Royal Ruby Red from angelfishusa and the second red Discus is the red valentine also from AngelfishUSA.

Thanks all, hey the Mk II will come down a little in price....the Mk III just came out! ;)

Being critical of my own photos, I had to twist my own arm a bit. Seeing edges of the next tank an the rims of the tank and stuff bother me LOL, but hey...just trying to show off the fish. Its really a different animal in the showtanks. This was the first show I've EVER shot. Took some pics at ACA in Atlanta a few years ago....with a point and shoot. This time knowing I was doing it seriously I contacted Mo Delvin (Aquamojo), some might know him he is one of the best, and picked his brain. He gave me some good tips and I think they turned out pretty good for the conditions. Lots of ambient sunlight in the daytime, showtanks, stress, etc. I really really really like the 20 Extra Highs for photography tanks, it actually made a world of difference in some of the tanks. With the height, it really gives the flash time to get down to the bottom and cast a nice soft light over everything instead of on a normal 20 where the flash is bearing down and really puts some hard shadows and light on the fish. The tall tanks also calmed the fish a lot more. Putting a flash above the tank made some in the normal 20s nervous as they could easily see something above them. The taller tanks the fish didn't care one bit.

Honestly I would say the Body of the camera is about 10% of the equation. 70% is lighting, and 20% is lens. I've seen lighting setups as simple as a single flash and a styro cooler to reflect it above the tank. Those of you there saw I was shooting with a round diffuser on my flash. You need something to diffuse the light. You can buy a commercially made one like I did or use something like rain gutter or a styro cooler. Point the flash up into the cooler or gutter material and the light will reflect down into the tank and not be as harsh. It will also spread the light out a little more instead of a beam of light. I opted to go the wireless route. I have a two Canon speedlite flashes, diffusers for each, and then a wireless controller for the hotshoe of my camera (its infrared). You just want a flash that can be used as a slave flash, wired or wireless is up to you. If you use it at home and have the camera on a tripod and the flash setup just sitting there wires would be fine (wires going from the camera to the flashes by the way). If you need something that moves, you might look more at a wireless setup like I have. Not sure what to recommend Nikon wise but for Canon its the St-e2 I use. I'll show you a couple pictures later tonight to show a flash setup above the tank.

I did not use a tripod with these photos Poco.

Matt a hands on class for Discus photography would be excellent! and then there's your software magic too (how DID you get rid of those microbubbles???)

Individually selected them and took them out. JK, but I did do a selection of the whole background around the fish (sometimes involved hand tracing the fish with a selection tool!) and did a noise reduction in photoshop. That's why the background (sponge filters, heaters, etc) appear blurry in some shots. A while back I decided, I'd rather have a blurry background that looks a bit photoshopped rather then tons of microbubbles, glass scratches, streaks of algae, etc.

Photoshop magic can be good or bad. Being able to use photoshop is like being a superhero, will you use your powers for good or evil? I just turned Kraig's Piwowarski RT into more of a Brilliant/Blue Turq. Thankfully we have good honest sponsors here that wouldn't try to deceive you in purchasing fish.

Surely none of our sponsors would stoop so low. I got into a big fight with a forum owner when he stole a copyrighted picture. I am no longer there. His forum is Tropicalfishforums.com. I hope takes my huge rejection of him and puts it an an unmetiontable place.

You need to put your copyright where it cannot be removed without being able to see the entire fish. Try putting it on the Pelvic fins or across the dorsal. Theives are everywhere. Your work is too good to be stolen.

Liz I didn't do much at all to that picture. Took out the microbubbles around it and in its body to give the picture a cleaner look. Didn't replace pattern (except for that long white streak in the tail) or mess with color. I personally like the patch of no pattern, the pattern on that fish is perfect as is. Like I said before and at the show, if you didn't buy it out of the bag I would of bought it out of the tank LOL, its an amazing fish.

I am guessing you used the blur tool/brush to remove the bubbles? You can see a clear reduction in clarity in the inside hearer coills.

It depends. . Most were $250 to $1000 . Sold before auction. ..

At Sunday auction..which lasted about 20 min.. since majority of fish sold Thursday-saturday... I think I got my 3 fish for like $100 each... prices vary..
