Canister & sponge filter placement in tank

Does it matter where my sponge filter is placed in the tank in conjunction with the canister filter intake/outlet tubes, filter housings, etc? I have attached a picture of my tank. Sponge filter is not hooked up - I just set it in the tank. Trying to figure out if it matters where I put it other than for how it looks. I plan on removing some of the sand and putting in a nice piece of manzanita/malaysian/mopani wood and MAYBE some floating plants and/or a couple attached to the wood. Thanks!

nope.. but i position mine where the current from both will push most of the bottom debris to one side for easier vacuuming
