View Full Version : Batch 1 Blue Diamond x Dark Angel

First the parents. Dark Angel Female x Blue Diamond Male, from the NADA show, originally fron Hans.

http://i567.photobucket.com/albums/ss118/nc0gnet0/contest5.jpg

These two lay eggs every 3 1/2 days. They are the same ones I have in currently in an artificial rearing setup (along with a few wigglers from a 2009 contest fish and one of my F1's).

http://forum.simplydiscus.com/showthread.php?94585-Experiment/page3

As these two are currently in a community tank, the wigglers are with foster parents, a Curipera x and another one of my f1's. they just began attaching yesterday and are almost 100% attached (you can still see a few stragglers huddeld in the corner if you look close).

With foster dad:

Caught in the act of a fry handoff:

Pass complete, now with mom:

http://i567.photobucket.com/albums/ss118/nc0gnet0/contest4.jpg

Sorry about the low quality of pictures, still in the fragile stage and did not want to disturb the parents too much.

Should be an interesting cross. That dark angel was all kinds of color in the sunlight at the show and yes, more for the contest. Rick, were you at the show. I do not recall meeting you?

I'm so interested to compare these against the dark angel fry I'm raising Rick. Looks like they're doing fantastic so far my friend. Don't know if you saw but I picked up a dark angel female that seems to closely resemble your female in part (the extremely blue one). Should be very interesting to compare the two. Good to see more people jumping into the competition and best if luck with them Rick!

Rod,

At this time I cannot conclusively say either way. I can identify some of the fry as being pb's but not all of them. It might have helped if I had ever raised blue diamonds (I haven't) to have a baseline to compare too.

And Rod, to answer your question I beleive them to be all PB's meaning the Dark angel is homozygous for the PB gene. Also suprised at the amount of red in the dorsal and anal regions at this stage.

Hi Rick,

They look really good.

Yes, i agree. Homozygous for the pigeon gene. Will be interesting to see how similar they are to dark angel. I don't think that red will last long, as soon as the secondary color comes in it will cover it over.

That is what happened with my batch, and VERY quickly, as in within two weeks from where this batch is now. Was wondering if that may play out differently given the cross but I assume it will not. Still looking great Rick and again, its awesome to have these batches to compare against eachother as they develop and to learn more about this strain and its potential.

Good to see you around Rod, getting your input on these things is invaluable.

Thanks. First tell tale sign is there is no variation in types of fry, each and everyone looks like the other. If the DA was heterozygous for the pb gene, only 50% of the fry would be pigeon bloods, and as a result you would see two different types of offspring.

Ok so I think i am following this. You know that she was crossed with a pigeon blood to make the Dark Angel and Pigeon is dominant. If she would have been Heterozygous meaning only half pigeon gene than half the young would be Heterozygous for pigeon and the other half would be non pigeon. But since she is Homozygous all the offspring are the same.. Heterozygous for pigeon.. (I just used the pungent square thing to figure that baby out). Am I getting this right?

He actually had a really white base under the blue. These had almost like a blue pearl sheen over the white then the blue peppering ontop of that.
Your female dark angel has like a pearlish sheen that reflects back different colors back in varying light. One thing I noticed at NADA. The female wb from the pairing Im talking about had that also. Makes me wonder if the same thing will happen in this spawn.

3 week update. Preparring to select my 30 contest fish and move them to their own 40 gallon growout tank. This will be something a bit new for me as I usually work with groups larger than 30 at this stage. I will do my first cull at this point (as I am moving them) as well.

http://i567.photobucket.com/albums/ss118/nc0gnet0/3weeks1.jpg

http://i567.photobucket.com/albums/ss118/nc0gnet0/3week2.jpg

Currently feeding them Al's FDBW's, cobalt flake food with pro-biotics, and BBS. They are seen in the pictures eating both the flake and the BBS. Normally I might have them completely off BBS at this stage, but as I have another tank with younger fry they are getting the leftover BBS.

I really have no idea lol they are looking like a more subdued version of a Dark angel, the pink is fading and the backgound body color apears to be a pale blue where a Dark angel is a pinkish white, but it is way to early to tell with juvies this age how they will turn out.

Just a reminder.....this batch is now 3 months of age and updates will be bi-weekly. To date I have had zero deaths from the fish I picked for the contest, This includes when I first culled down to the original thirty and then when I culled down to the final eight. I do still have roughly 150 fry/juveniles (separate from the final eight) in two other tanks. I have had two deaths (not including culls) from these two batches. I consider these incidental as none of the other fry/juveniles experienced any signs of sickness. I did have roughly 6 belly sliders and a few with abnormal fins/gill plates that had a date with the in-sink-r-ator.

Water changes: Usually 2x a day of at least 50%. A lot of this depends on my schedule/work. Typically I feed them a moderate feeding just before I leave for work(FDBW). When I get home from work, I feed them a heavy feeding (BH flake from Inland empire) and wait approximately 45 minutes and then do a 80% water change. They then get another feeding after all my water changes are done(usually a pellet). Just prior to the second water change they will get a light feeding again of FDBW's and then another water change of 25-50%. NO feedings after the last water change as I like to keep the water as clean as possible as it will be a period of time before the next water change and at least this way in the morning they still have relatively clean water before I leave for work.

The only exceptions to this routine occur during the weekend when it is possible to perform a water change in the AM. When this is possible they get a heavier feeding in the morning and one more light feeding at noon.

Yes, the dark angel, at least the one I had, is homogenous for the pb gene.

"Dark Knight"

As they are blue and white like a shark. I would name them Great Whites.
ya know great white shark=king of the ocean
great white discus=king of the aquarium.

Will those reproduce 100% like them? They look nice. If its a new strain you could call them Blue Angels.

Hello Rick,
I purches 15 disc last winter/spring in Caledonia. I have one that looks very simular to this one. It was about 50 cent size when I got them.
The one I got is the largest of the one I purchased. I had never had Disc prior to that and I have really enjoyed them. I had a 45 gal tank when I got them and now have them in a 150 gal.
Thank you for the introduction
