This little girl (yes, I think it is a female) has finally completed QT and has joined the Tefe shoal in the 230. She has made herself right at home.

Here she is at the show. She did take third place in the wilds class.

and here she is in her new home hanging with the Batch C male.

I believe she will Tracey and you got to see her in person. How are your two doing. Any luck on the spawning end?

Thanks Drew, I hope I can get her to breed. The odds are terribly against me but I am still hoping.

Drew, best guess would be at least between 3 and 4 years. She was the 2010 grand champion of the wild green class in a international show and if you assume she was wild caught as an adult (18 to 24 months of age at least) plus two years as a show fish. Plus wild females are very hard to get to breed so why all the body part crossing. :)

They are doing really well, but still eating their eggs - spawn 3 was more like the first and the eggs were gone pretty quickly. I may move them to a community tank this week and see if that gets them a little more protective of their spawn.

Thanks Jeff, I have a feeling may need all the older breeder's secret on this little fish.

Tracey, what is your TDS? Try getting it around 80.

TDS is 80, temp is 82, and ph is 7.6
I think the last time was my fault I moved some stuff around in the area around their tank in the morning and Poppy (the male) seemed a bit uneasy the rest of the day and she was fine but even making his runs that evening he didn't seem as relaxed as spawn 2.

Do you think Poppy is the one eating the eggs? I would give them time. He may need to mature a bit more.

I see you are doing a good job. And she was not happy when I moved her to her own 20 gallon to prepare her for the show.

Kraig, guess it was the small tank she didn't like.

Does that look like the face of an egg eater, lol, Poppy is my buddy so we will just keep blaming her. (he really doesn't dig the iphone shoved up against the glass though)

And maybe the deep voice. LOL I sure hope you can get him or her to breed. It would be great to write Watanabe to tell him we finally know the sex of his Grand Champion.

Hi Mariowa, I certainly do not know for sure but my guess is based on over all look and behavior. The behavior goes two ways and based on who the fish interacts with or doesn't interact with. I know who my males are and this fish does not really interact with them too much, just like the other females.

I do have one spawning female so believe I am able to see most of the behaviors.

PatBearing in mind my record at guessing the sex .... if I was pushed into a corner I'd say male, only way to be sure is if it does or doesn't lay eggs I guess :o

Thanks Paul, best way to figure this out is to place this Tefe with my breeding female and see what gives. She is currently on a set of 100+ eggs with the batch B male so maybe afterward...:D

Hi Pat,
Looking good. They have their own challenges, don't they? It's great to be able to see the photos and compare the progress, which I think is pretty impressive.
What's really making me kind of crazy is that my fish like the assorted flavored flake foods so much. They blow it around and eat it well. I'm not surprised, though. I've been processing Crampton's paper, word by word for the past year, and they are very eager for my little fingertip's worth of earthworm, brine shrimp, etc., flakes (the ones from the show. ;O>)
With wild fish in a breeding program, it will be the few (or many, why not?) kids that are so interesting.
Your Tefe will make you happy.
Salud,
Mary

Pat, I thought you learned in Atlanta the best way to sex a fish was chop chop. Personally, I much prefer Paul's method.

Second Hand Pat

Keith, no chop, chop on this fish. :p Paul's method will definitely be employed.
