I'd like to get a stronger pump to fill my tanks (right now it's a semi-slow process). using standard RV hose, with the understanding that the inner diameter influences flow rate, what is the max gph pump recommended???
head height is not a variable in my setup - minimal.

my old pond pump from Lowe's is slower than I'd like, but for the life of me I can't remember what the gph is (duh - bought it long ago).
I've searched here for this info but can't find a definitive answer.
thanks in advance! :)

How big is your tank? And how fast do you want to fill it up?

I use Mag drive pumps, they are pretty good can be used inline or submerged. Check the models below.

How big is your tank? And how fast do you want to fill it up?two tanks: 1 65g (Discus), and 1 40g (Angelfish)
to rephrase my question......what's the maximum gph recommended for filling, without blowing the fish out of the water? LOL

my current pump is 560gph - I went & dug thru all my old paperwork to find the user manual :)

but I'm still wondering about gph...........

thanks for the replies!

If you get a magnetic drive pump get the biggest you can afford then you can always put a ball valve on the output to control flow. You can empty at full flow and then turn down the flow to fill.

Trish, I use a Mag Drive 950 for filling. I point the end of the hose down at the bottom. It is a bit strong for fry so I place the hose at the other end of the tank from where the fry are.

thats what I use. one end is connected to the pump and the other is connected to the python faucet hookup. when I fill my tank the python faucet hookup seems to disperse and aerate the incoming h2o a bit. then i just unplug the pump, drop it in h2o storage barrel and connect the python side to the faucet and turn the faucet on. to drain I reconnect the python side to faucet put the pump in the tank and plug it in.

the slowest part of the process is refilling the the water barrel.

I use 3/4" tubing to optimize water transfer.

Maybe there is the name of the manufacturer, model and serial number on the pump so you can contact them for information?

I am using rv hose and assume your is 20 feet long. Take a look at this, I find they are easy to use.

I have the Quiet One 3000 (500gph at 5') and am looking to upgrade to maybe the Quiet One 5000 (925gph at 5') from Jehmco
or the MagDrive 9.5 (950gph at 15') from Kensfish. I really like my Quiet One pumps but never tried the MagDrive's.

I don't have far to fill water storage barrel, nor tanks thank goodness.

Trish, I use a Mag Drive 950 for filling. I point the end of the hose down at the bottom. It is a bit strong for fry so I place the hose at the other end of the tank from where the fry 950 would be awesome! almost cut my time in half :D. I also have to fill my ageing barrel from an RO storage container, doubling my 'fill-er-up' time.
my only other question re Mag 950 is, does the pump have standard water hose connections?

I'm using mag drive 18.

Here is the GPH

Pumps 1800 GPH @ 0', 1625 GPH @ 2', 1375 GPH @ 4', 1075 GPH @ 6, 1000 GPH @ 8, 875 GPH @ 10', 825 GPH @ 12', 700 GPH @ 14', 425GPH @ 16'

I also use one inline to drain, works very well. During summer I just pump all the tanks to the garden.
