You're right. They have hard time attaching to the parents comparing to brown base parents ... Most of them stayed at top corner on the first day, I was so worry, but they finally make it

I was worry about this pair, they didn't eat anything for month, but they finally make it ... how the fry from other pair?

I managed to to raise about 50 fry artificially from the other pair. I sold all except 10. I want to see how they turn out. So far they are about 2.5" but not showing much color. I'll see how they look in another month.

Josie has a pair like yours with lots of fry and of course I pickup up a few. They didn't color until 3-3.5." It is now pushing 4" and I have had it almost a month since I got them at 3".

Ryan, going back to the adult parents. You say they are Stendker Fire Reds. I have two of those fish I bought from Hans 3 weeks ago. Mine were red at Hans' and when I put them in my tank they were orange. Now they are red orange (Three weeks later). Should they be all bright red like the photo on the Stendker site? Will they turn more red that your adults? I just checked Hans' site and when I googled him there was a video from 2/13/13 of a fire red that is all red. My fish were that color at Hans' place. Will your fish and mine turn that red? Is there any food I can feed that will help turn them that color? Hans says try Tetra Color foods. Sera makes a Diuscus food that is supposed to bring out red, does it work? My fish are pretty like yours but I wanted all red.

This is my first time of Stendker Fire Reds fry, so I don't really know when they turn more red, and how much red they turn when they're adults ... I didn't feed them any color food yet ...

I think Stendker Fire Reds from Hans maybe selected good red from the batch ... so yours will turn more red then adults, like the parent I have ...

I hope mine turn red like the photos and the video. If not they are still beautiful fish! Someone told me to try live bloodworms for more red. Mine are 5 1/2 inch. I bought them about 3 weeks ago as 5" but I did not measure until now. I selected my fish for more red and blue markings in the fins, not size or shape.

Try Al's Bio FDBW... There's folks like Kraig feeding their Fire red those red enhance food and their Discus's red started to show red after a few weeks of using it. I say it's worth a shot if you want them to be red like when you got them at Hans.

After seeing how stendker juvies look like right from the factory, it seem to me that stendker beefheart mix has color enhancers. If you ever prepare a mix with high porcentage of beefheart you will realise it normaly looks brownish to clear brown in the water. Stendker beefheart mix is red as hell in the water column....so figure out what give such color (some claim it is due to the use of cyclopezze in the mix, but you have to add a lot to turn the mix so red and Stendker label in the food tells it is 90%+ beefheart :)

Elliots

Sorry, I do not feed beefheart. Even the beefheart flakes that I bought because it fouls the water. I tend to overfeed sometimes and I have a planted tank. I cannot change as much water as I would like so I stay away. I am doing OK with Tetra products and FDBW. FREDYX I hope that does not mean my fish will never be that red!

About color enhancers, if you stop using them the color fades away after some time, therefore I would rather avoid them to let the fish develop its color naturally.

In regard to the parents, I originally owned the pair. Ryan bought them from me last spring. I bought them from Hans as 3" juvies and grew them out to adults. When I first got them, they were pretty much red and stayed pretty red until they were fully grown. They were much more red at 6 months than Ryan's juvies are now.

I don't know why the parents were so much redder at the same age. Not sure if Stendker uses color enhancers. Never heard that they did. I just always thought Fire Reds looked like the ones on Han's website.

I also got a spawn out of this pair but I sold all the babies before I could see how they would color up. At 3 months they were all just pale gold.

Hi Ryan. Do you use any aerator at all? Or just the sponge filter?

rdiscus
05-16-2013, 01:28 PM
Yes I have external filter ... if you don't have sponge filter it's ok, just one good external filter is enough, this is only tank I have sponge filter left, old thing I didn't want to throw away ...

JOSNNGUYEN
05-16-2013, 01:49 PM
So you don't need aerator if you already have external filter? I thought you have to provide more oxygen? Probably this is a stupid question to ask:p

External filter, air line (air pump), heat and water :)

You mean k1 media filter? No

JOSNNGUYEN
05-16-2013, 02:42 PM
Thanks Ryan. Having another question for you. Do you still need external filter if you already running bio filter such as sponge filter or K1. Because I'm thinking to buy another tank (if it cheap lol) but too expensive to buy external filter. So if I just use my K1 bottle and heat. What do you think? It is work? Thanks

rdiscus
05-16-2013, 02:52 PM
It depends on how often you do water change, I don't do WC everyday, i only do twice a week, so external filter help a lot ...

External hanging filter is not expensive

JOSNNGUYEN
05-16-2013, 02:58 PM
I got canister filter from fluval. It's not cheap. I'm surprise that you only do wc 2 times a week. My discus poop a lot so I have to do every other day. Plus whenever I feed them frozen beef heart, the water get dirty real quick

rdiscus
05-16-2013, 03:19 PM
You don't have external that why water get dirty quick ... buy the hanging filter, it's cheap ... since you have other filter inside your tank, don't need to buy expensive one. I only buy cheap ones since I have many tanks can't spend lot money on filter :)

JOSNNGUYEN
05-16-2013, 03:27 PM
Fluval canister filter is not external filter? In that case I need to buy hanging filter then. Because I hate dirty water LoL

rdiscus
05-16-2013, 04:30 PM
Yes it is ... any filter stay outside of the tank is call 'external', your sponge & K1 filter are not since they stay inside the tank ... Fluval cansiter filter is stay outside and it sit on floor and it's expensive. I use the one hanging outside, on the back of the tank

Beautiful color and pattern. The one in the middle has excellent shape, especially around the chin area... very round.

Outstanding thread :-) I really would love to have a solid red discus. It just occurred to me that my 55 acrylic, has a black background. its not removable. What contrast can I expect to see, will it pepper, will I be able to appreciate the color ? Any suggestions.

please contact me by email. I'm interested in purchasing 6-8; 2.5-3" discus. My 75 gallon tank should be fully cycled soon. I just want to know what you have available.

Just joined the group. Yours was the first thread I followed. Quite an impressive diary. Loved seeing the fry develop. The color changes as they became adults was very interesting. Congrats! Look forward to see more fish stories.
