I have a 36 gallon tank with 3 adult discus in it. I am planning on moving the tank to its new home, about 50 miles away, this weekend. Is it preferred to transfer the fish to a separate bucket and move the tank on its own, emptied of water, or to move the fish in the tank with a minimal amount of water (assuming this is feasible, which in this case it might be)?

For ease, I'd do the buckets. Also, is the tank barebottom?

Use a cooler for keeping the temperature. If you can, stop by local pet store, ask for some kind of oxygen caplet (it's blue when you drop it in the water). Good luck

Buckets it is then. Also, the air temp is right around the discus water temp now (~80-85 F), so I don't think I will need to provide heat, and I'm planning on just running an air pump in the car with one of the car's electrical outlets, if that's possible.

The tank right now has a very thin layer of large-gravel substrate, which I am planning on removing while the tank is empty.

Yup, easy!

I use a cooler also, it keep the temp and you don't have to worry about water going everywhere, ive done 2-3 hours trips that way never got problem .

Every time i bought fish i bring it as a optional precaution ,bagged or strait in it .
