View Full Version : My newest delightful design, a different breeding "cone"

I have been thinking about a hanging "cone" for some time now. It is based on the old breeding slates some used to use long ago, some still do use them for discus and angelfish. My design can hang up, or stand up next to the glass on a BB or sand tank bottom and comes with 50 lb test fish line and a strong suction cup (this is attached to the tank outside glass). The "cone" is flat except for a good sized lip on the bottom edge to catch falling eggs or fry. It is 10" top to bottom. I will make them in terra cotta or white or swirled clay or glazed.

They will be $9 each and come with fish line and a suction cup, the glazed will be $12
I will include a piece of plastic gutter guard as an egg protector, for free if requested.
Here are pictures of my new design, please let me know what you think of them. I am looking for a good name to call them other than "cone".

To get the ball rolling, I will send a free pottery gift to the first person who posts a pic here of their fish spawning on one of these new "cones" or even just a pic with eggs on the "cone".

Pics here of my 125 gal discus tank and some of them are already checking it out, after only a few minutes in their tank. The pair I have are pecking on it already.

Very nice Barb, I love the Glazed ones of course. Do you have these in stock already or are you going to be making them soon?

Thanks Pat!
Kraig, I just made 4 of these as demos. But I will make as many as people want to order. And I can do them in all the glazes I have for the regular cones I make. These new "cones" are 1/4" thick, sturdy and heavy enough not to break unless they are dropped on a very hard surface.

I just had my pair of Super Checkerboard Pigeons spawn on the new breeding flat again. Funny side note: I received the contest prize on the same day! THANK YOU!!! It was the night of the full moon; so, I had three other pairs laying eggs at the same time on the regular cones too! Here are some pics of the new flat cone though. I will have to get a better camera one of these days... Sorry again for the poor quality.

Thanks again Barb! For the contest prize and the great new design! It's the only thing these two will spawn on. I should have wrigglers tomorrow :D

Nick

P.S. Everyone should give these a try! They really are outstanding quality and Barb's customer service is top notch!

I had a something other than Discus in mind when I saw Barb's newest creation. I thought this would be great for a Angel tank. I simply turned it around so the lip would be against the glass and give it a slight angle for the Angels to lay on. Here they are in my Albino Pinoy Blue tank and my Koi tank. Barbs timing was perfect. I was moving the pairs from 20's to 29's today and planting the tanks and guess what arrived today.

Thanks Barb. They are going to work out great.

Well that is just great Larry! So glad you like them and I hope the fish will too. Those are two mighty beautiful angel pairs you have there. Good luck and let us know how they do. Thanks for your order!

I made the flat cone for discus, the bent part is like the lip I put on my cones, to catch falling eggs/fry. But it works well the way Larry has it too.

LOL, after posting I looked down on my desk where I unpacked the box and guess what is there. The package you included with the line and suction to attach them to the tank. Little details like that is what make a great product.

What a great thing to see Larry! I am always so happy to see fish using my clay things. Hope that huge Koi spawn is a success and you get lots of beautiful fry, the parents are stunning! The other ones are lovely too.

What about making them nine inches to accomodate a one gallon wide mouth jar for artificial rearing (that would be great for the angelfish breeders too), or could you upon request make them nine inches? I do like them.

Larry, Those angels are great. May I assume the unglazed 'slate/cone' is preferred by the angels due to its texture?

I used the unglazed because they are cheaper and my tanks are not show tanks but rather breeding tanks in a fish room. Barb sells both the glazed and unglazed and I have seen just as many good reports on one as the other. Doesn't seem to make a difference. With angels before I started using Barbs products I used a piece of bull nose tile and they were always glazed. I think it is just a matter of your preference.

Hi Barb, can you post some hanging slates to Australia? Would like to purchase 6 if shipping isn't too much. What colours do the swirled come in?
Cheers for a great invention!

Hi Kerrie, I would be happy to send you what you need. But so far, everyone from Australia who wants my clay products ends up declining when I tell them the postage cost. It would be $30-40 for postage alone. What do you think?
