Can anyone tell me what this is? It doesn't look like hair algae (2 me) & I don't think its beard algae. It reminds me of a Java Moss Ball, but I'm really not sure. I've searched the forum (Simply) & Google (images) trying 2 find something that looks like it. Java Moss looks the most like it. But I never put Java Moss in my tank. So, I'm guessing its some kind of Algae.

I am not sure myself, but I think it looks good and is interesting texture to the eye in your tank.

Technically yes it is an algae ... either Aegagropila linnaei or Cladophora aegagrophila (think these are synonymous) - commonly called moss balls :)

Anything that will eat this? Or the best way 2 get rid of it? I've pulled it off my drift wood w/ 1 of my Anubius Plants & as u can see in the pic its came back in 2 spots on the same piece of wood. Plus I see it starting in other spots & I don't like it.

If you don't want it and it is attached to the wood, then spot treat with H2O2. Persoanlly I really like it.

I have similar algae growing on my overhanging branches. It provides great microhabitat for my red cherry shrimps, which make fine food for my wilds.

I do kinda like it 2 a point but its popping up on other pieces of driftwood, my overflow (inside), & now in my substrate. Not liking that. I don't want 2 rip it off if its going to spread even more.

Any ideas from anyone what may eat this. I really don't want to try any chemicals. It worries me. I've tried the local fish stores - No one really gave me any ideas. Well my favorite place said maybe try Flying Foxes but he said there was no guarantee. He had heard they would eat all kinds of algae but wasn't 100%. Told me that up front & as always was very helpful.

Anyone? Think I should try some type of Algae Remover?

I wouldn't put any chemicals in either. You may just have to maintain it by
hand. I have read though that black mollies and tiger barbs will eat algae.
Another one that will probably do is flag fish. They are hard to find.

+1 Look up fish that eat algae on the internet and consider some of those. Shrimp might work, too. But not as well.
