I have been using this air pump for a while:

It switches automatically to battery during power loss, then recharges when power is restored. It is supposed to run for 20 hours intermittently in one of the settings. Well, today I was able to test it. Power was cut at 8:30 am in my street today because they needed to trim trees. My daughter came home at 2:00 pm and the pump was not working anymore. I donīt know when it stopped working, but it worked less than 6 hours. Very disappointing performance. Fortunately, power came back at 3:00 pm and my discus are fine. But I would not recommend this product.

I have one, and it only runs intermittently for a couple of hours.

I had a battery backup air pump (penn plax air pod ebay link here, do not buy this piece of junk http://www.ebay.ca/itm/Penn-Plax-Air-Pod-Battery-Back-up-Aquarium-Fish-Tank-Air-Pump-Up-55-Gallon-/360480389309?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item53ee4e38bd) it was a complete waste of money... I would not run at all when plugged into the power outlet, and would run off the batteries exclusively... 4 D-cell batteries got me about 3 days of air supply.

I wondered about this item, its only $31 on kensfish and even though it may not have worked automatically it DID work on battery for 3 days?

Yes, 3 days on 4 d cell batteries, howevef as the 3 days progressed air output was lower and lower. (as the batteries faded obviously)
