I came home from work to a little surprise. I recently moved a group of fish out my 77 Gal because because there were 2 pairs in these showing signs of spawning. They are still going through all the motions, but nothing yet. The group I moved out decided to have a party of their own.

http://youtu.be/uD3XqkVJejw

This happened some time between Wednesday night and today.

ph 4.9 - 5.0
TDS 80
Temp 85 F

Nothing special done to the water, just regular water changes straight from the tap (municipal water supply) using safe.

Killer pair too! Amazing color!

Thanks, it took me by surprise. There are too many other fish with them for any real chance at raising them, but at least I might get to see if they hatch and confirm the pair. So far they take turns staying with the eggs and fiercely chase away anyone that comes near.

Beautiful pair of blues indeed.

I absolutely agree, but until they lay eggs there's nothing and up until now just getting this far was seeming unlikely.

I removed the other discus and put them on the other side of the foam divider and they didn't seem to react too much. So far they are still taking turns at the spawning site. Maybe there is a chance they will hatch :)

Congrats! Beautiful pair. Boy would I kill to have that water come out of my tap! Instead I have pH 9.3 and 360 TDS. Gotta love the Rocky Mountains! Best of luck to you!

Pat,

The other 2 pair I left in the 77G are dancing and shaking again, but still no real action.

I have the same pH, only my TDS is twice that LOL.

Len that pair is beautiful!!! best of luck to you (and sorry I'm late to this!).

Len, maybe time to start the three day dry to wet simulation.what is this???

Trish, this is where Len is not going to feed or do WC for about three days on a tank containing two pairs of these blues who only seem to need a trigger to spawn. So on the third or fourth day you do a big WC and feed heavy to simulate the start of the wet season when the rains flood the river system being lots of clean cooler water with lots of food.

Just got home and almost half the eggs have turned opaque. They are still taking turns at them though. It's been about 54 hours since I discovered them, so I'm guessing if they don't start hatching between now and tomorrow morning they probably aren't going to.

Len
09-23-2012, 08:32 PM
ok, I was wrong. They have started to hatch and the female is moving them to the other side of the wood :)

Len

Probably. So far they haven't seemed to care much if I've been around the tank. I'll see what I can do after I do my water change in the 77 :)

I'm not sure how much you can make out, but if you look on the right side of the wood next to where the small piece of plant root is hanging, there is the group that she has moved over. At first glance she looked to be picking at the wood, but then it looked like she dropped something and picked it back up and spit it at the wood so I went for a closer look. It still took me a minute to make out what I was looking at lol.

Congrats Len, what a beautiful pair indeed.
Your friggin tap comes out at ph 4.9 -5.0 or was that a typo error?
In any event keeping our fingers crossed for you buddy.

No, I really explained that badly. I had been doing changes without using RO or anything and just doing them using tap water in that tank. Once the changes are done, the ph in that tank settles usually low 5s, but at the time I found the eggs I took it and the meter fluctuated between 4.9 and 5.0 From the tap right now it comes out at about 6 sometimes a wee bit above, but not much.

Your tap water is perfect for heckel discus. Really beuatifull pair, i presume the red one is a female?

Len

Well I came home for lunch and she has either moved the wrigglers again or they've been eaten. They're still guarding the eggs that weren't viable though.

Hmmm, sounds like they may have eaten the wigglers :( The Tefe's eat any unhatched eggs. I would say there is a good chance they will lay again. The Tefe's were not successful until their third spawn.

a small update, I've been corrected and although these fish were sold to me as Manacapuru they aren't. They came in at the same time as a shipment of cuipeua and I received the wrong fish. That's ok because I'm happy with what I have, but felt the need to clarify so as not to be giving bad information and perhaps giving the impression of even being deceitful.
