I went home today for lunch (more to check my tanks) and first discovered that the pair separated from the rest in the 130 G had laid again. I walked into the other room and realized that one of the pairs in the 77G also laid. I'll try to get pics tonight.

Spawn 2 for pair 1

Spawn 1 for pair 2 (They are still watching the eggs even though they aren't viable)

Len, how are things this morning?

Len
09-28-2012, 09:41 AM
Things still look good from what I could see. The only light on the tank were the dimmer ones because the main light hadn't switched on yet so all I could really make out walking by was that they were still sticking close to the spawning site. Last night, I did notice that far fewer of the eggs had turned white than last time, so that seems positive as well. I'll be going home at lunch to check again of course and will be able to see more by then.

The second pair are still watching the eggs that have all turned white, so I'll give them until this evening and if they don't clear them away by then, I'll suck them up with the hose diruing a WC like I did with the other pair and hope they lay again in a few days.

Eggs are all gone. I doubt they would have hatched that quickly and got moved so I guess I'll have to wait and see if they lay again.

Its all good Len, they'll come around. Practice makes perfect.

Len
09-28-2012, 07:14 PM
I'm sure they'll figure it out, but they certainly aren't very bright because even though they appear to have eaten the eggs, they still rush over to the wood like they are protecting something when I walk by.

Pair 1 is very very nice Len. Hope you have much better luck with them next time.

It's been a couple of weeks Len, any news from the front?

Len
10-11-2012, 11:05 PM
not really :( Both pairs laid last weekend and they watch guard and constantly move the wigglers, then they all disappear about the time they should go free swimming. I assume they are eating them. That makes 4 spawns for the first pair and 2 for the second pair. The first pair are acting like they are going to lay again but ....

Keith Perkins

Sorry to hear that Len, I remember those days OH so well. I drove my poor mentor Martha about nuts I'm sure when I was waiting for my fish to have their first successful spawn. Given any thought to trying pulling one of the parents to see if you can figure out who the culprit is? I've never actually done it, but I've certainly thought about it.

Len
10-11-2012, 11:18 PM
I hadn't thought of that, I just assumed something must be off but not sure what. If I can get my 90 up and running, it would give me more room to move them around and try things like that though.

What are the parents Len, It appears the male is a wild, but is the female a domestic?

Rick

They were sold to me as Manacapuru blues, but then it was pointed out that that isn't what they looked like at all and looked more cuipuras (bad spelling I know), which were the only other discus received by the supplier at the time. It was speculated that the wrong fish were sent to me, but either way I was happy. The females seem to turn that really bold red colour when spawning. The female of pair 2 is pretty much identical. As much as I like them, they are frustrating me lol. I guess though, I have to admit that several months ago I was frustrated when they wouldn't pair up and spawn, so I'm at least a step or two closer :)

Do you have any domestic pairs? Is it possible to pull one batch of eggs one time and let the domestics foster them?

Rick

Len
10-12-2012, 11:11 PM
I would, but the only domestic fish I have is a Male Piwo red Turk. I had some advice tonight to increase my gh because it is almost non existent from the tap. I can measure with a meter and get about 43 TDS and about 90 ms from the cold water tap, but the chemical test (gh) doesn't show anything. Thoughts?

I thought it was time for a new video so I just took this. It is pair 1 - fifth spawn and looks to be the largest spawn yet :)

Keith,

Keep thinking about my fish!!! Pair 2 are laying in the other tank right now. This is actually getting funny.

Cool. I'm sure you're getting some excellent advice from down South, sure hoping at least one of the pairs makes it to the goal.

Len, what about using something like RO Right or similar product to help boast the GH?

I think the best advice I can give you is listen to the successful woman from the deep South.

LOL Keith

Len

The closest thing I could find was cichlid chemistry, but it may be the same thing. It raises gh without changing ph. I'll try adding enough to bring the gh up to 50 or so once the eggs hatch (by chemical test)

0 gh-do you have a water softner? I thnk what you really need to measure is KH not GH.

Len
10-13-2012, 08:53 PM
no water softener, that's straight city water. Why do you say raise kh instead of gh? I can raise either and have test kits for both, but am interested to know your reasoning.

Another one of my GREAT recommendations to your effort...chuckle, chuckle, chuckle.

Any guesses how many fry you have at the moment? I know that's a really tough question at this point. Looked like a nice medium size spawn by domestics standards.
