Parting with most of my Discus
I'm not posting this in the buy/sell forum because I won't ship them since they are huge and nobody here would want to buy them because their fertility is so low. They are the offspring of some magnificent show fish that I won in an auction here. They are SS's with a very strong blue base and with red spots on their bodies. They are beautiful and once upon a time I had all my hopes on them. I'm posting in General Discussion because I want to talk more about having to do this takes a little piece of my heart.
I'm selling the offspring from the first spawn from the show fish and spawns from those. 17 fish in all ranging is size from huge to very large and almost at breeding age and some that are only around 4" TL. The LPS owners and I have a wonderful friendship but I know the market that we have down here for fish and understand that they can only take 2 large Discus at a time so it will be a long slow process. It will be painful for me because I know that people have no understand of how to properly care for Discus and they will die slowly from poor water quality. But I also know that I need to cut down and that fish that aren't both excellent quality and highly fertile are a waste of time for me.
I have not given up, though. I have an excellent female SS that I bought from Al as a wee tiny little thing. She has paired with one of the younger males from my own line. They have spawned in a 100 gallon Discus community tank. I just set up a 40 gallon cube and I'll move the pair over next time they start feeling frisky.
Forgive me if this is long and rambling. I couldn't help myself.
Re: Selling most of my Discus
I know how you feel, Liz. I'm moving out a tank of high quality 7" discus to make room for a new batch. No one will pay anything close to market prize for good fish around here and I'm not interested in shipping. Lucky for me, a fellow aquarist and good friend was asking where to source discus and jumped on them. I'm taking a HUGE discount, but they'll at least go to a good home.
Re: Selling most of my Discus
A good home is worth more than money. Who knows. Some of my fish will get lucky, too.
Thanks for understanding.

The ones with the strong blue base are already of breeding age. The others will be of breeding age soon.

Francis I tried to post them of the Facebook page but I'm too thick headed to post anything there. I would be very grateful to you if you would do it for me.

Boy, these are nice looking fish.
I tend to stay away from snakeskin types because they never grow as well for me as 9-line discus. So obviously you're doing something I'm not. Nice going, Liz!
Re: Parting with most of my Discus
Thank for the compliment, Willie. They grow fine for me but they take longer than the 9 line.
