I just picked up a 55g food safe blue drum to go along with my 30 gallon one. The new drum has your normal plastic smell to it. aside from rinsing it is there anything I need to do before using it?
Also is it safe to age the water in the garage? That’s generally the room that things such as gas and weed killer are stored.
If it's food safe and had food safe ingredients in it I'd think it would be ok to use. I would bleach it and then use dawn dish soap to remove any possibility of oil residue and rinse real good. Should be fine in the garage...
I would also use small amounts of water as a test before committing to large water changes.
Thanks jeep. This is a brand new barrel from the manufacturer so it’s never had anything in it. That’s a good idea to just take a bucket or 2 from it before commuting to a large change
My main concern is the plastic offgasing
If they say it's food safe it should be. Contact the manufacture if you're concerned. I'd rinse with bleach and let dry. I wouldn't use soap or detergents.
These blue barrels have a thin layer of transparent film inside, which is food safe and addresses off gassing into food grade liquids. It's sprayed on at the last step of manufacturing and cannot be peeled off.Quote:

Dawn is a very safe detergent and non-toxic. After all, they use it to clean baby birds that have been covered in oil, lol... I use chlorox and Dawn 4 times per year when I clean out my storage barrels.
