Re: Bristlenose pleco breeding
Sometimes the male will kick the eggs out.

I thought maybe it was just me. But I couldn't get that fella out for the life of me. It's incredible how well they can hang on in there.

That's why I leave him in and shake out the fry.
Re: Bristlenose pleco breeding
That's what I ended up doing. I didn't pull on him or anything, I just figured he would want to "flee" if I dunked water in/out enough.

Nope mine stay in no matter how many times I dunk the cave to shake the fry out.

Bushynose egg masses really don't need any parental care. I just remove any extra egg masses to an unoccupied quarantine tank - usually sitting on top of the sponge filter. The result is 100% hatch out and survival.

Thanks, Willie. You taught me a new thing.

I didn't think that there were any plecos that did more as far as parenting then guarding the eggs from predation. Are there pleco species that do more than that?

Good point. I have rescued hatched, but mostly egg yolk, Panagolus tankei (L398) that were inadvertently dumped out during a large water change.

They all developed fine in a breeding box with a piece of well seasoned driftwood. So the parenting was mostly about protection.

Moving Day...
Just emptied the 10 gal breeder of fry. Mom and Dad have the place to themselves for a short while.
Fry are moving to the 75 gal with their older brothers and sisters.
Its kind of funny because I really thought this was a dud batch... turned out quite large.

Good sized batch Al, albino?
Pat
Re: Bristlenose pleco breeding
Albino.. standard tails. Hardy hard workers.
Re: Bristlenose pleco breeding
They look eyeless, I suppose little pink eyes are tough to see on a similarly colored body. I've been shocked by how big the batches of fry are in the three spawns I've had. I'm sure they're heavily predated on in the wild, but it seems like every river in their native range would be a big wiggling mass of bristlenose fry. :D
