I use those hydroballs for hydroponics, they are good, light, also there are smaller white ones that float though its a pain lol they spill and get in my koi pond I hate those ones now. I have a 15 ft by 20ft dog pool with a Beast of a sand filter, would make the best fish filter its awesome, but alas its too cold here to do something like yhis or I would.
So cant wait to see this project unfold should be great ! Just keep those herons out lol

I really like my sand filters also never needed to be changed. Only back flushed once in a while after a very long period of time, I mean, long like years. Eventually the sand breaks down and needs to be replaced.
