Re: Carol's beefheart - will not disolve in tank!
I have from day one added garlic = beleiving it helps to clean the GI tract of Discus- I have just froze a new batch with out it and I'd like to see the difference???
I highly admire Carol and her experiences and would not mind having the knowledge she does of this fish - SO I'll give plain beefheart a try.. Seeming it may be a cleaner food.
I have to say that I have had great results with ONF1 frozen with a few of my Discus over just a few months- that will accept it at an age of approx 1 yr. The growth seems more rapid - They have become much more beefy looking than the ones that do not like it. None of my discus ever cared for color bits???
I do have a question - Protiens are energy foods-- In the case of horses that are not performance horses - Protiens can be an enemy (making horses more nervous or high strung if not breeding or high exercising) - How does this or does it relate to Discus?
Re: Carol's beefheart - will not disolve in tank!
Horse are herbivores - discus are carnivores. Discus need a high protein diet.
Don't use liver - it really fouls the water. You can use turkey breast, but I've read the discus do not like it very much and I think it floats more than beefheart.
Re: Carol's beefheart - will not disolve in tank!
Hi Carol,
The salad Shooter is so cool! Can you please give me the model number for the salad shooter? I can find the same one.
thanks
Duncan
Re: Carol's beefheart - will not disolve in tank!
You know I tried the salad shooter dealy and the pieces are too big for my discus. I think I'm gonna try a small cheese grater with the pieces partially frozen. We will see how it works. :o

Re: Carol's beefheart - will not disolve in tank!
do they even make salad shooters anymore? i kinda looked around..havent seen any in stores..and i have never heard anyone who actually uses them for salads..maybe the second hand stores all have them?
Re: Carol's beefheart - will not disolve in tank!
[I]Hey Carol & everyone,
Aside from Beef Heart, will chicken heart and chicken breast work? As an alternative to Beef?
Re: Carol's beefheart - will not disolve in tank!
Ok, I have the Pro Salad Shooter from Ebay. I bought a beefheart whole from Myers market , it was frozened . I thawed in the refrigerator for two days , did not work with it for two more days and then was afraid to use because I though it might have spoiled so I threw it away .
If I buy the frozened beefheart, I have to thaw it to be able to clean . How do I handle that part, what kind of time I have for the meat not to spoil ????
Do I thaw, then clean, then cut in half an inch squares, the freeze , then introduce to the salad shooter ?
I have three or four attachments with the machine , which one is the best for this purpose ?
I just do not want to take a chance and give the discus fouled meat ..
Thanks,
roberto.

carol
this was Kees' in holland original idea from many years ago and was talked about a lot on DIp and DPH back then.
discus are carnivores? but don;t they aso eat veggies & algae?
anyone else remember the DSG? what happened to that?
Re: Carol's beefheart - will not disolve in tank!
Chicken heart will probably work - I think breast might float?
Clean partially thawed heart and cut in small cubes. You can refreeze (or partially refreeze) the cubes before putting through the salad shooter.

Re: Carol's beefheart - will not disolve in tank!
Well, I guess I will look for advise from the butcher at the store on how to handle the meat being thawed and frozen again...and I will experiment with the different blades the Pro salad shoter came with.
I though I might hear some advise from the people on the forum that have handle the beefheart and might have wanted to share their experience .

Re: Carol's beefheart - will not disolve in tank!
Carol's beefheart shredder is what I discovered along time ago. I check out "junk" stores and garage sales for them...I found out that the main drive gear is metal driving a plastic orbit gear...if you tilt it, say to shoot into a bowl, it causes slack and pretty soon strips the plastic gear a few teeth.
You throw the shredder away. It lasts much longer if you set it on table and shoot onto plate, then use. I must have ruined a couple of dozen of them over the years, even colapesed the little shreder drum a time or two...I do several hearts at a time and just shoot into quart seal a meal bags...After the air is pumped out they look like blood worms. Another thought is use heart that is frozen in say a refrigerator then a chest freezer, not quite so hard to shred.

This is what I do when the BH is frozen. You can let it sit in room temp and clean it when it is still semi frozen (I think it's easier to trim and clean) then cut in cube like Carol's pics and freeze then salad shoot away.
