Spring,umm,pond fever.
Attachment 72804Attachment 72800Attachment 72801Attachment 72802Attachment 72803We've had a mild winter around here, and I've been antsy to work outside. My cory guy showed me his pond, and they mis-understood him when he gave the dims, and it ended up being 5 1/2 ft at its deepest. It's in a typical chicago back yard, and isn't to big until you walk up on it and look in.Got me thinking to work on mine. They're the typical plastic inserts you get at home Depot,I belive they're 110gals into 125gals into 175gals.pulled the bottom insert and I'm going to make it longer and deeper.I belive it's 18" now, let's see how far I get before I'm tired of chopping tree roots.Bottom insert is one withthe center for bog plants.

Re: Spring,umm,pond fever.
Me too Bill, cleaned out a small frog/goldfish pond in the yard today. Wish I had my camera when I netted a pile of rotten leaves from the pond floor and when I dumped out the net onto the ground out popped a half asleep huge bull frog. I'm sure I heard him say "what the heck are you doing to me lady, I was sleeping peacefully" He slowly hopped into nearby bushes, hope he is back in his clean pond by now. Good luck with your pond work!

Re: Spring,umm,pond fever.
So how many discus can you fit in there? :). You don't have to answer that -just dreaming out loud.

Re: Spring,umm,pond fever.
Well,my bud told me he had a piece of epdm 10x20.A few days later, after I started digging,he called to tell me it was more like 10x10 with a corner missing.Needless to say,I had to make adjustments because the price is still right. On th plus, most are 20-45mil thick, and this piece is 60mil.Attachment 73019Where the small cinderblock is where I had to start filling back in.Attachment 73020Thor is now in what was once part of the pond, and now to be a "patio" section.Attachment 73021Attachment 73022Its hard to tell but in the lower part of the pic is where I dug out for bog plants or breeding mops. The piece is kinda "L" shaped,And instead of trimming it,I kept digging the shallows.,Attachment 73023

Water level kept dropping 2"-3" over nijght.Tried to figure what I changed. Then I realized in digging out more shallows,I folded over the corner that had the piece missing.Got some seam tape from a roofing friend.Hope this does the trick.Attachment 73085Attachment 73086

wow - looks great! really nice job.

Re: Spring,umm,pond fever.
Good looking pond Bill! Having a pond leak will really ruin your day won't it? Been there and done that several times, usually a filter area leak for me. Or a large tree branch falling into pond and puncturing liner, very bad day with that one!

Wow! It's gorgeous! You really have a way with the gardening too. I love the planting. That maple is beautiful too. I hope you get to enjoy it often. I am glad that Thor approves. He must be tired after all that hard work.

Re: Spring,umm,pond fever.
The pond looks great! Especially with those beautiful bushes behind and your happy dog.

Re: Spring,umm,pond fever.
Thanks guys.It all started with one little kidney bean pond from menards. When I found some that had spill ways, thats how I expanded.Almost every rock was pick up off a job site. Its under four large trees,so a lot of it was "F-this,I ain't digging any further, roll in the rocks and back-fill in the dirt."The tree roots were a big problem.Even with the expasion I quit alot saying I was done, and the next weekend, instead of trimming off the liner,I dug the shallow end a little more.

Honestly my gardining is either plant a bunch of stuff and see what lives,or like this latest project, split the old hosta's because they're free and hope they live.

Re: Spring,umm,pond fever.
Bill, you did a darn nice job with your pond. I get to live my pond dream through others, cause my wife freaks out at the sight of a frog. We all know that if you have a pond, the frogs will find it.

I had a lab/dane mix that was terrified of riding in the car when I got him at 3 months. He became obsessed with riding..if he got out when we were leaving, we'd have to drive him around the block because we couldnt drag his big butt outta the van. Btw we had to buy a van cause his big butt outgrew the car :-p

The lfs by me has $2 baby koi.I usaly get some white or gold or combo of each. With the fishline around the pond have been actually growing instead of replacing.Stopped in for some tadpoles and waterlettuce/hyacinth,and grabbed five of these. They're mostly black with gold/yelow.The pics stink and seem to make them look the reverse, but they're darker, and in the sunlight look like fish outlines swimming around.Actually pretty cool.Think I'll go back and grab somemore during the week.Attachment 74271Attachment 74272

Closing down the pond Bill for the winter?
-
Re: Spring,umm,pond fever.
Yeah, and I picked up some 100gal stock tanks from Josie.I usally keep the fish outside, but 2 years ago a blizzard overwhelmed my heat discs,so I bring in the biggest and smallest fish now.Had them in 2 40gals,but those have had discus in them this summer.Going to put the stock tanks in the garage. It's attached, and now with a new door, dosent go below freezing.
