2012 Simply Discus Challenge Pictures/Video, Harry Marsh Alex Piwow Red Turk Babies
Al is indisposed, so I'm documenting through videos here...until it can be moved to the appropriate area.
If I don't do this, I'll forget videos at some point.
Water conditions. 70 TDS
I use 'safe' to dechlorinate
Water changes vary, but 20 -75% per day (most days). I'll skip a day on rare occasion if things get too busy.
I start by feeding baby brine shrimp
I remove the babies pretty quick from the parents (14 days or so)
Another 14 days and I move to golden pearls
And then a varied diet from that point on.
Alex Piwow parents
I will start with pictures of the parents. The male is a straight line
The female is a weirdo. Past batches show the babies end up looking like the father

We will call these guys '0' day old (first day free swimming)
The aquarium is dirty. I don't do many water changes, hoping they attach
Here is my timeline.
Most people seem to go by 'free swimming' for aging (from what i can tell)
Mine lay eggs. 55 hours they will hatch. roughly 4 days of 'wiggling' on the side of the cone is followed by 48 hours wandering the tank before they attach (above)
You could easily argue these are a week old, but one day 'free swimming'
You will notice only the male in these pictures. My female eats the eggs about 40% of the time, so I often remove her. This male is an excellent parent

Re: 2012 Simply Discus Challenge Pictures/Video, Harry Marsh Alex Piwow Red Turk Babi
May 22nd, when I heard about the contest. (i took a video of a weather map from online with the date on the bottom)
5 days old
You can't tell much difference. They went from long, narrow little slivers to barely starting to look like fat tadpoles
I start brine shrimp on day 4 or 5 of free swimming. They don't normally eat it yet, but I have it in the tank

Re: 2012 Simply Discus Challenge Pictures/Video, Harry Marsh Alex Piwow Red Turk Babi
May 24th. 7 days old
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l_1UOJjlEmA
My male really hates this camera. You can see brine shrimp in the water. Also the babies are starting to flatten out a bit and look like fish
Sidenote: All of my fish become very dark when breeding

Re: 2012 Simply Discus Challenge Pictures/Video, Harry Marsh Alex Piwow Red Turk Babi
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jk2mG58Z-l0May 27th = 10 days old
You can see the babies are starting to 'round' out a little bit
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RQF7RehZztM
May 28th = 11 days old
Removed from male and in their own aquarium
Maybe a little early...but I had the female paired with another male that created eggs. I wanted this male as the surrogate parent

13 days old
The largest one is almost the size of a dime. Not as tall, though.
They have been moved to a 20 gallon 'tall' aquarium
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FvG6UxFcVFo
I do frequent, small water changes. I feed as much baby brine shrimp as I have time to put in the tank

Re: 2012 Simply Discus Challenge Pictures/Video, Harry Marsh Alex Piwow Red Turk Babi
June 6th, 2012 20 days old
Surprisingly slow growth, frankly. I usually feed a bit more brine shrimp. But they're all looking healthy
The smallest are the length of a dime (maybe not quite as tall). Some are larger than dimes
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J6WtFj-7mXk
Note. No culling, to date. There are probably 7? runts I could pick out. Usually, they'll die when I transition to golden pearls

Still eating brine shrimp, but i'm trying to transition to golden pearls
They aren't happy about it
-
Re: 2012 Simply Discus Challenge Pictures/Video, Harry Marsh Alex Piwow Red Turk Babi
June 11th, 25 days old
This is the first day I've seen any eating golden pearls. That means I'll quit brine shrimp and force all of them to eat them
I'd guess 2/3 are longer and taller than dimes, at this point. 1/3 are close to the size of a dime

Bonus video, for those curious
Here's how simple my brine shrimp setup is

Re: 2012 Simply Discus Challenge Pictures/Video, Harry Marsh Alex Piwow Red Turk Babi
27 days old on June 13, 2012
I made a second move, from a 20 gallon tall to a regular 55 gallon
Maintaining the 20 gallon was becoming a chore (dirty looking water shortly after cleaning)
This 55 should serve them for 2 or 3 months before I need to split them up again

Re: 2012 Simply Discus Challenge Pictures/Video, Harry Marsh Alex Piwow Red Turk Babi
June 17th update
So, what? 31 days old?
One month old?
The smallest one is probably the size of the penny, maybe slightly larger
The largest one is almost twice the size of the penny

Re: 2012 Simply Discus Challenge Pictures/Video, Harry Marsh Alex Piwow Red Turk Babi
June 22nd update
36 days old.
These poor guys were abused over the last 3 days. One feeding a day, one water change a day.
I moved to a new house and here is the start of the fish room.
So, now they're back to multiple feedings and water changes
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JqIGnLBEtE4
And another, 38 days old (today)
Automatic water changing setup almost completed

Re: 2012 Simply Discus Challenge Pictures/Video, Harry Marsh Alex Piwow Red Turk Babi
40 days old, today?
More progress on fish room
100% well water, no chlorine
58 TDS
Lots of water changes (automatic system putting water in, draining excess)
When I start to trust the system, I anticipate 100% water changes per day with no work
Anyway, some of these guys might already be three inches with tail
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bq3CNavAObQ
Ps. Yes, the wife was adding unknown commentary to this video
Pps. That is a penny taped to the back of the tank

Things are progressing very well. Great job documenting everything for us in such detail. I live in Charlotte and would be interested in purchasing some of the juvies after the Holiday week. Enjoy the heat wave.
-
Re: 2012 Simply Discus Challenge Pictures/Video, Harry Marsh Alex Piwow Red Turk Babi
How many Juvies did you have there Harry?

Nasty heat wave. We're hiding for the weekend...and let the a/c do battle with the weather.
I've got maybe 40? juvies. I'll try to count. Maybe 50
There are also 8 or so juvies from a different pair in that tank (hence the really small guys)
Same female from a month later, but a different male.
I've got someone picking up a few this weekend that has been begging for them for a while.
I don't know if I'll sell any more. I'm concerned. I've only had one spawning in the new house with the new water (a day after we moved in). I'm hoping all gets back on track, soon.

Re: 2012 Simply Discus Challenge Pictures/Video, Harry Marsh Alex Piwow Red Turk Babi
Totally understand! That's the beauty of breeding your own fish, you can decide what to do with them. If you change your mind please let me know. Hope you figure out the water or transition challenges with your fish. Wish the best.

Look at all those fish harry! You wouldn't miss one little jumbo male in your community tank? Would ya? :)

Re: 2012 Simply Discus Challenge Pictures/Video, Harry Marsh Alex Piwow Red Turk Babi
I am confused, aren't you suppposed to be down to 30 at dime sized? Our did I read that wrong?

Potentially true. And do I remember narrowing it down further, when they get bigger? At what age and how many?
We should clarify. 10 or 12 of mine in the videos are from a later spawn: they will be smaller and not in this competition - just keeping them in there out of simplicity
I see your point though, someone with 60 could be at an advantage over someone with 30
....not sure I'd care though...kudos to you if you have the space to grow out that many
-
Re: 2012 Simply Discus Challenge Pictures/Video, Harry Marsh Alex Piwow Red Turk Babi
yea. understood to be at most 30 to start with when dime size..

Re: 2012 Simply Discus Challenge Pictures/Video, Harry Marsh Alex Piwow Red Turk Babi
Warlock alerted me that these are not 3" fish.
I guess you're overly optimistic when you dont pull out a ruler. Upon measuring, the largest are a shade over 2"
He was definitely right.
Regardless, I'm now down to 30 in this tank. I have tried to count a few times: pretty sure I'm at 30, exactly. I put the smaller fish from a later spawn in their own aquarium (and culled a few obvious fish with defects)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=01SAZVV7u6M
The fish room is getting nicer and nicer. And I've got my first spawn from my reliable female.
She didn't like the usual male and choose a different one for this spawn
Ruler, July 2nd. 44 days old, I believe

(also some of my older youngins at the end of the video)

Thanks :) They look nicer in better light. But, I don't have time for show tanks any longer
I'm going to make an effort to make better videos. Here is the first (longer, with less jerky movements)
I've noticed the previous videos were annoying to watch.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u09hmLV3lhY
PS. Looks like I'll have some Albino Leopards via Mike Beals, soon. Today, those laid eggs (you can see the male fighting off the piwowarski Cobalt)
I wasn't really looking for these....but the coloration has grown on me
I suppose I'll have to make a tank for them....

Re: 2012 Simply Discus Challenge Pictures/Video, Harry Marsh Alex Piwow Red Turk Babi
July 7, 49 days old
More progress on the fish room, too.
Unfortunately, the albino leopards ate the eggs almost immediately. The red turks ate them on day two. I moved the albino's beside the red turk pair, hoping they will learn something on the next go
Instead, I've had the two pair battling at the glass divider for the last week. Very little breeding activity.

Re: 2012 Simply Discus Challenge Pictures/Video, Harry Marsh Alex Piwow Red Turk Babi
Nice discus. I have to ask, those naturally looking blues in your long video are wild discus?
-
Re: 2012 Simply Discus Challenge Pictures/Video, Harry Marsh Alex Piwow Red Turk Babi
Nope, no wild discus here. :)
The Cobalt (blue) and Red Turquoise are all Alex Piwowarski fish from Germany
-
Re: 2012 Simply Discus Challenge Pictures/Video, Harry Marsh Alex Piwow Red Turk Babi
More eggs!
These from my favorite colored male (straight lines)
I put the female in the community tank: she has been eating the good eggs of late and leaving the fungus'd eggs
This male usually does pretty good (leaves all eggs)
Also some closeups of the juvies

Those are german discus. Much speculation to believe they're bred with wild discus to bring out those bright colors

Annoying automatic focus on my phone. I should try to disable those in the future...
Apologies that you may want to kill me after watching a few of those :)
