Breeding by the seat of my pants
As I said in another tread my young stupid pair finally managed to produce wigglers. Not a bad bunch for a first successful spawn, either. But when I moved the cone into a pitcher in their tank, the pair totally ignored them. It was almost certain that the young pair would eat the wiggler once they went free swimming and I let them in the tank with their new babies.
Luckily, the day before the wigglers were to free swim, my older pair with the huge male spawned. A ray of hope! I put the big pair's eggs in a pitcher and hung inside their tank. Then I put the pitcher in with the almost ready to free swim babies.
The older pair went straight to fanning the other pair's eggs through the plastic, but they didn't ignore their own eggs. So far so good.
This morning the kids from the young pair went free swimming. I lowered the water level in the tank to just under the level of the water in the pitcher and set the pitcher on the bottom of the tank and did the same wits the big pair's newly laid eggs.
I gave the pair a bit of time to get used to the situation while I made a cup of coffee. Then I went back down to the fishroom and turned the free swimmer's loose with the big pair.
So far so good. Adoptive dad is very dark and the babies swarmed him. Mom is not as dark but they're feeding from her as well. So far she's more interested in trying to blow the kids back on the cone.
I wish I could spend the day in the fish room watching as things progress but this pair is very aware of me in the fishroom, and it makes them spooky to see my big face in front of their tank too often.
I'll post an up-date after lunch time. Hoping for it to be a happy update.
Re: Breeding by the seat of my pants
There is hope that I might have some discus again after all.
Re: Breeding by the seat of my pants
There is hope for you, me and Al this time. I peeked in on the pair and babies are going back and forth between them. I'm starting to feel optimistic which is when disaster often strikes.
Re: Breeding by the seat of my pants
Hope all remains well, Liz!

Re: Breeding by the seat of my pants
This pair is now feeding the foster kids as well as their own. There is 5 days difference in the age of the fry.

Re: Breeding by the seat of my pants
Al, the female I got from you spawned the day before yesterday. The eggs look good and the pair has has discovered them in their pitcher of RO.
You'd better tell your yellow eyed lady to get going.
